The "Happy Planet Index" purports to "measure what matters: the extent to which countries deliver long, happy, sustainable lives for the people that live in them. The Index uses global data on life expectancy, experienced well-being and Ecological Footprint to calculate this. The index is an efficiency measure, it ranks countries on how many long and happy lives they produce per unit of environmental input." They use three basic criteria: "Life Expectancy" "Well Being" and "(Ecological) Footprint". While life expectancy can be directly measured and footprint at least estimated, "well-being" is mighty subjective. Since "Footprint" is heavily weighted, most developed countries are pretty much kneecapped before they can get anywhere. So who are these awesome countries? Top 10 (out of 151): 1 Costa Rica 2 Vietnam 3 Colombia 4 Belize 5 El Salvador 6 Jamaica 7 Panama 8 Nicaragua 9 Venezuela 10 Guatemala The US ranks 105. Behind Sudan (101), Namibia (96), Turkmenistan (95), and Haiti (78), Myanmar/Burma (61), etc. Apparently, the Palestinian territories, Algeria, Iraq, Pakistan and Indonesia (all in the top 30) are pretty damn good. The rotten shit hole of Luxembourg comes in at 138, behind such bastions of paradise like Uganda, Congo, Rwanda, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. It seems the best way to have a "Happy Planet" is to not die young, but don't really do much of anything. Hazleton comes in at #16. :)
