RAMALLAH, Israel – Away from the pomp and ceremony of Barack Obama’s appearance in the West Bank on Thursday, the reaction to the president’s visit ranged from hostility to indifference. Mustafa al Khteeb, a school teacher with seven children, was preoccupied with supporting his family, not the president’s arrival. “I cannot feed my children,” he said as he gestured at an empty refrigerator and suppressed tears. “I feel like half a man. This is a shame.” Al Khteeb’s salary, small to start with at about $700-a-month, is rarely paid on time, and usually he gets only half of it. The Palestinian Authority is strapped for cash and the first people to be affected are the 153,000 civil servants, including teachers, who can barely survive the month. In January, they went on strike calling for full payment of their salaries. “I blame President Obama,” al Khteeb said. “Why?” a reporter asked. “Why not blame your own government, or Israel? Why is it America’s fault?” “Because Israel does what America tells it to do and America is on the side of Israel,” he answered. The Palestinian Authority’s money shortfall is due to a combination of disappointing domestic revenue, falling international donations and Israel sometimes withholding the hundred million dollars it collects a month in tax on behalf of the PA. Meanwhile, unemployment runs at around 18 percent, and average annual income for a Palestinian at about $12,000 a year, less than half of that in Israel. Many here pin the blame for the hardship on the United States, and that spilled over as Obama’s visit approached. Workers in the Muqata, the government compound, played cat and mouse for days with protesters who defaced posters of the American leader, waited for them to be replaced, and defaced them again. Small demonstrations against Obama popped up daily in Ramallah with slogans like “O-Obama, go back, Palestine is not for sale,” and “Obama, you are the enemy of the people of Palestine and ally of the Jews. You are not welcome here.” This anger was in marked contrast with the joy and hope with which Palestinians greeted Obama’s first term. They believed his 2009 speech in Cairo in which he called for democracy and for the rights of Palestinians and expected a change in American policy away from what they see as America’s blind support for Israel. Four years later, little has changed for them: Israel continues to solidify its control on much of the West Bank and few believe in any peace process. No mention of the issue was made on Wednesday when Obama arrived in Israel. User Details are only visible to members.	Sadly I must agree with Sedu. The majority of the western nations no longer understand how to conduct wars and that is why we keep losing them... Unless we fight fifth rate military forces and not occupy the cities. The only thing that the left do have right about Palestine is that a peaceful resolution requires the two state solution... How to get there is the key. Land for peace was attempted and the Palestinians chose to become violent as they saw the deal as a sign of weakness and tried to take the rest by the point of the bomb and missile. The reason Isreal builds on the Palestinians lands is to make it clear to the Palestinian people that time is running out and that they must learn to be peaceful or lose the land for all time. (or the length of Isreal's existance) The only way Isreal will have peace is to be allowed to make the Palestinians understand violence = loss of land. Peace for land will be a long process. Think of it another way. When you were a child and did something wrong, did your parents ground you for five minutes of five days? If in those five days, you made any mundan error or did smaller things wrong like failed to do your chores on time, didn't the grounding multiply? Yes, you must treat the ignorant as a child because that is what they are. Ignorant to the fact that violence will only cost them more and possibly everything.

User Details are only visible to members.	Nothing entertains me more than reading proud ignoramuses displaying their "doltishness" 1- that a teacher, an educator would utter such crap is quite scary. It should give pause for anyone who possesses an iq of 59 points or higher. 2- the article in itself caters to typical American ill informed populace. The Palestinians had their money withheld by the USA only one time, it was released almost immediately. It was withheld because they acted against the Oslo Accords and made a unilateral move that both, the US and Israel warned them not to. They went in front of the United Nations Security Counsel to seek statehood recognition. Susan Rice warned them of the conseques. They however chose not to heed the US's warning. And so, the US withheld the USD700mm for a couple of months, Israel released their money less than two weeks after they went in front if the UNSC. The Palestinians are notorious for making idiotic decisions. Then blaming others for them.

What they are willing to do to maintain that nation as a peaceful nation is nothing and thus the people they shoot at ought to continue to twist the Palestinians arm until they cry uncle or are pushed out into the sea. To have peace, the Palestinians need to accept that supporting those launching missiles into Isreal is only going to bring more pain and rightfully so. If Isreal or the US wanted the Palestinians dead, they would be.
