What is causing this lack of man power? A great many issues, starting with respect. While deployed the military keeps you running 16 hour days with no days off.... For a year or more. No sex, porn or alcohol. If caught with or engaging in sex, alcohol or porn, you are given an immediate artical 15. (general order one alpha)

So now we have young twenty something's bottled up with weapons... Is it any wonder rape is rampant? Or soldiers puss on dead terrorist? Anyone who honestly studies the human mind would say no it isn't surprising. You have hormones, violence, death and now the power over life and death... Without a outlit if any kind.

At home between deployments you are always upgrading your training. This isn't as bad for the active duty who are on orders 24/7. It's their job... Their profession. But for the guard, we have real jobs, most of whom won't give you Friday and Monday off to play soldier... If you hand them the law they hand you a pink slip or do away with that position for a year or generally make your life hell.

Oh did I forget to add the upgrade training can only be done on computers which must have government programs installed... Programs which slow down the computer, but are needed to connect to the secure websites... (I wonder why we have Chinese hackers in our secured systems? While our soldiers log in from home?)

So now you come home from 8-10 hours of work, only to do military work without pay for the next six hours... Every day. Wait what about the wives and children? Oh the commander says that their your problem... A job you are paid 8k a year for (while not deployed) comes first.

Yet we wonder why we have E-6s living in trailers and with PFA's against them? Why rape and drugs are running rampant and when they come home from war, they are more likely to commit suicide... Yet another epidemic within the military.

Joan:

I am not calling for the governor's job... Isn't my state, so it isn't my right. But what I do have a vested intrest in is the national guard. Even if it is another states guard unit, the public lobs us all into one big pot.

Sadly as you have said, this happens far too often. Even in the PA guard, we have members who cannot be issued fire arms within the US, as they have pfa's against them... Amongst other issues which legally prevent them from being armed within the states. (until waved by law)

More sad is the fact we cannot get enough volunteers to man the units we have. My father is on the way out. (medical) he has trained three people to do his job in the last two years. (technically more... But only three have the rank to do it) two of the three are deployed and the only one able doesn't have the mental toughness to tell a colonel the regulations on weapon/ammo turn in.

In the big scheme of things a Ssg is LOW in the food chain, and sex scandals in the military be it the National Guard, Reserves, or Regulars is far from NEW. The Airforce relived the Commander of a Airforce training unit at Lackland AFB Tx due to a problem there with a few of his NCO's. Now true the Gov is where the buck stops at the state level, and if this is a true story, this soldier should and will be punished. But I hardly think the Gov should get the boot. Other wise think how many Presidents we would go through, sense he controls the Regular forces. And in my time in the Army I can think of well over 20 such reports in the Stars and Stripes and Army times, from the SGM of the Army to a few Gen officers getting relived of duty, and all ranks in between.

Ghost:

Does VA's response alarm you? Sadly the more I learned about VA the less respect I had for him. Out of the lot of these neocons, VA was the closest to respectable... But sadly he had joined the rest in the mud.

But what else can you expect from animals that only respect those with big sticks? Sadly like a child, he forgets that the big sticks aren't the ones which hurt the most... Short thick sticks hurt more and do the most damage.

I was introduced to this fiasco through the story of a whistleblower, Staff Sgt. Chad Wille. According to the Tucson Citizen, Sgt. Wille was driving the unit's Humvee when approached by a civilian who told him he had seen that exact same humvee weeks earlier on the street shooting pedestrians with paintballs. Like any good NCO, Sgt. Chad took this info back to the unit and filed a report with his supervisor. Not content, he decided to start asking questions, starting with the person who had the keys to the humvee that weekend. His quest was met with this response, “You’re not aware of the bum hunts?”

Rather than back down, even at the request of several officers in the chain of command asking him if he was a team player, Sgt. Wille investigated further, peppering the youngest enlisted troops with questions and learning about more than just the "bum hunts."

But as the investigations progressed, Wille became a target, military and police records show. Instead of being rewarded for integrity, he was subjected to a two-year campaign of harassment. Records show he was falsely accused of groping a teenage girl and threatened with a bullet to the head. His confidential military records were provided to an ex-convict. His National Guard photograph was stolen and posted on derogatory fliers outside National Guard headquarters, known as the Papago Military Reservation, in Phoenix. He was subjected to other allegations, investigated and pressured to resign, but refused.

{Reprint of a journal by an Arizona citizen}

This military wife has been writing about the role of complicit commanders in cases involving sexual assault and sexual harassment of our military members. A story recently broke in Arizona about the horrific actions of an Army National Guard recruiter and the story focuses on his so-called "bum hunts." Yes, this man took out new recruits and young enlisted in the Army National Guard Humvee and "hunted" the homeless with paint guns. But the story isn't a simple one of a single recruiter and his power over young and easily-influenced recruits. It is a story of sexual harassment, of lack of respect for military members, both active duty and veteran, and of the men given the responsibility to command this unit and their failure to do so. It goes far beyond one bad apple and it makes me question the entire chain of command in the Arizona Army National Guard.
