User Details are only visible to members.	Sorry folks but Aus is not spinning these statistics as I had found these same statistics and he beat me to the post. The FACTS are that not one single southern republican voted Yea for the civil rights act of 1964 in either the House or Senate version while both the Northern Democrats and Northern Republicans voted overwhelmingly to pass the act. Overall the civil rights act of 1964 passed with a 70% + margin. It was obviously a SOUTH vs NORTH vote not Dem vs Rep. And lets not forget.....President Kennedy pushed for the Act and after his assasination President Johnson continued the push for passage......both Democrats. So lets stop the spin and read history. I'll repeat that back to you next time a fact is attacked for coming from "the Democratic Underground" or some such fantasy. But clinging to partial truths - like trying ignore that the southern Democrats who opposed the Civil Rights Act virtually all became Republicans over the ensuing 10 years - is pathetic.

" Just to clear this up: Civil Rights Act of 1964 Democratic Party: 153-96 (61%-39%) Republican Party: 138-34 (80%-20%) The Senate version: Democratic Party: 46-22 (68%-32%) Republican Party: 27-6 (82%-18%) House vote by region: Southern Democrats: 7-87 (7%-93%) Southern Republicans: 0-10 (0%-100%) Northern Democrats: 145-9 (94%-6%) Northern Republicans: 138-24 (85%-15%) By 1980, how many of those seats that were held by "Southern Democrats" were still Democratic? Notably, the leader of those "Southern Democrats" was Strom Thurmond, who retired as a Republican - presumably not because he had a change of heart over race relations...

User Details are only visible to members.	LOL - no spin. The Southern Democrats of the 1960's were as a whole far from liberal on racial issues. That's why LBJ said, as he signed the Civil Rights Act "We have lost the South for a generation."

User Details are only visible to members.	As far as I can tell, the Republicans who favored Affirmative Action were roundly decried as being "not true conservatives" by their brethern. And clearly, the Dems who opposed Affirmative Action and tried to keep Jim Crow alive were hardly liberal, and most of them crossed party lines to become Republicans during the 70's and 80's (if not sooner, with Strom Thurmond and his breakaway "Dixiecrat" party who's primary platform was Segregation). There was actually a much more diverse range of opinion in both parties during the 60's - we're now to the point where the most liberal Republican is to the right of the most conservative Democrat on virtually every issue (depending on how you classify the idea of eliminating the Federal Debt, which seems to have become a liberal idea in recent years.)
