I have many employees that earn a stable wage - enough to sustain a family and modest lifestyle, but really little more than that. Only a few of these individuals show any desire to advance and plenty of them have told me over the years that they do not want the stress of added responsibility. They seem genuinely content to maintain a stable status-quo. Should I pay a man a wage that will enable him to advance when the man tells me that he is not interested in advancing?

User Details are only visible to members.	Here is some consessions for you righties... I will concede the fact that the civil war was not directly about slavery. It was economics, states rights and ownership... of other human beings as slaves. The southern businessmen would lose a lot of money if they had to pay their workers a fair wage... So they liked slave labor instead. The southerners were losing freedoms and right to to own another human being as property for the last 100 years... But I will not accept that we could have waited another 100 years to free the slaves slowly... Slavery isn't a social issue, it is a root issue of what it is to be human... To treat each other humanely. The southerner failed in this regard and continues to do so by their defense of the confederacy in any manner or issue what so ever. Funny thing is, some states had mini rebellions over slavery long after the civil war was over. The coal fields where the coal miners rebellions took place. This mentality to own things to such excesses that you would pay poorly or not at all your fellow man, who does your work for you needs to stop. Technology has advanced to the point that medical tech does in fact saves and prolong life. To say that it isn't a need like food and water is to say that you have no use after a determined age and ought to die.... Hello logans run anyone? It is slavery to pay any man a wage which doesn't allow that man to advance themselves. And it is not sane thinking to say that he ought not have had a family if he was not of means. The human race not designed nor should we design ourselves to be so calious as to tell a parent that they must watch their children suffer and die when their exist medical technology which can save their lives... But you do not want to dig into your pockets to provide a fair days wage for their labors. So we turn to the government, we turn to the government because you fail to provide and thus in your attempts to maintain all the wealth for yourselves. Though you may not legally own someone, you are still no better than a slave owner, for you own the worker none the less through their need to eat and try to save what family they have left. It is because of your inability to accept your social responsibilities that we the people turn against you further and further with each new election, each new generation... Your numbers dwindle and ours swell. Insanity dictates that you do not stop to examine yourself, to ask the question of why you are seen as the enemy of humanity. You do not want the answer and will not believe it when told the answer.

If it makes you happy, Perf, I will gladly acknowledge that when the slave issue finally came to head, northern pressure on ethical grounds was only part of the equation. In a country (and colonies before that) that allowed slavery for several hundred years, naturally it is unlikely that either side would have clean hands. We have been arguing about the causes of the civil war. The righties keep saying that the war was about economics, constitutional issues, states' rights, etc. I assert that regardless of the myriad reasons the war started, slavery was at the root. I have showed you the SC declaration that clearly frames the cause of secession in terms of an irreconcilable split with Lincoln and his supporters over the issue of slavery. As a matter of logic, the fact that modern northerners might act self-righteously without good reason on this issue is a straw man. This fact does not improve your argument or weaken mine. Thus those who repeat it over and over are the real parrots. Since you have such strong views and devote substantial time arguing about them in these forums, you ought to consider studying basic philosophy and logic in order to take your game up a few notches. Preaching like a parrot to an already-sold choir seems like a horrible waste of your time.

Pew: 53% of Americans Now Say Government Threatens Their Rights and Freedoms February 7, 2013 By Pete Winn (CNSNews dot com) - For the first time, a majority of the public says that the federal government threatens their personal rights and freedoms, according to a new survey conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. The nationwide telephone survey found that 53 percent of Americans think that the federal government threatens their own personal rights and freedoms while 43 percent disagree. Of those who say government is a threat, 31 percent say it is a major threat, while 22 percent say it is a minor threat. Fully three-quarters (76 percent) of conservative Republicans said that the government threatens their personal rights, and most (54 percent) said the government poses a major threat, by far the highest percentage of any ideological group identified. Even among moderate and liberal Republicans, 57 percent view the federal government as a threat to personal rights and freedoms and 32 percent said it is a major threat. Among Democrats, 38 percent said the government is a threat, just 16 percent said it as a major threat. According to Pew, the survey also found “continued widespread distrust in government.” Only one quarter of Americans (26 percent) trust the government in Washington ‘to do the right thing just about always or most of the time.” A full 73 percent of those surveyed said they “can never trust the government” or can trust the government “only some of the time.” Pew, which doesn’t ask the question every year, said that the 2013 response is a significant change from March 2010, when opinions were almost equally divided over whether the government represented a threat to personal freedom – 47 percent said it did while 50 percent disagreed. In surveys conducted between 1995 and 2003, majorities of those surveyed rejected the idea that the government threatened people’s rights and freedoms, Pew indicated. For instance, she said a bill was introduced just last month in New York mandating that “no owner or operator of a restaurant in this state shall use salt in any form in the preparation of any food for consumption by customers.” “A complete ban on salt in restaurants! Offenders could be fined up to $1,000 under the terms of the proposed law,” LeBon said. The bill, which is sponsored by State Sen. Eric Adams (D-Brooklyn), is currently before the New York Senate Committee on Consumer Protection. LeBon also pointed to 160 pages of new rules handed down by the Obama administration in early February, which are required under the child nutrition law championed by Michelle Obama and passed by Congress in 2010 “America is a free market society, where individuals should be allowed to make the best choices for themselves and their families without micromanagement by the government.
