Everywhere we've sent troops since Japan attacked Pearl Harbor has been 'elective', or strategic. Word choice depends on your bias I suppose.

The thread title could have addressed "self described conservative swingers", but it's become basically the same thing. Even as people love to believe theirs is quite a unique set of beliefs, when you call yourself a "conservative", you're pretty much raising the flag of regressive thinking.

"Being fiscally *responsible* may be quite different from being fiscally *conservative*."

My first few posts in these forums were about the pitfalls of using simplistic labels like liberal and conservative. People who value ecological "conservation" tend to be politically "liberal," while political "conservatives" often decry policies promoting conservation.

Is it fiscally "conservative" to spend a trillion dollars on an elective war, and charge it to the national credit card? (And yes, on the flip side, there also are policies promoted by political liberals that have a negative longterm affect on the supposed beneficiaries).

"Conservative" and "liberal" labels are tools for the mentally lazy, to pigeonhole people in a simplistic manner so that real understanding can be avoided.

"Paying over half of your income to sustain the unearned entitlement programs is socialism..."

But nobody in this country does that, nor anything close to that. Taxes go to maintaining roads and a million other uses that make it possible for you to have an income. Basically, you get to live in a country. A tiny fraction goes to "unearned entitlements".

A better priority might be to do with less, so that everyone can have at least the minimum.

What this does not recognize is that in our country if you have a large income you are already sharing a large portion of it with others. Most folks who are making over 125K are already losing about 50% of it to taxes.

One of the foundations of socialism is the redistribution of wealth. Paying over half of your income to sustain the unearned entitlement programs is socialism as far as I'm concerned.

We are already well on the path to socialism. I am highly resistant to any more steps in that direction.

Being fiscally *responsible* may be quite different from being fiscally *conservative*. To "conserve" is to keep things the way they are. If you are a conservative with money, you want to keep your money; if it's flowing a certain direction, you want to keep it flowing that way.

It's good to be able to keep, or use, or invest what you've earned. But it isn't always the top priority of a reasonable person. If you are on a disabled cruise ship, you might figure you've paid for this, you're taking this, and you're keeping it. A better priority might be to do with less, so that everyone can have at least the minimum.

Some people just want to have more than others have. Even when that means everyone has less. And to hell with the future.

I don't think so much of liberals and conservatives, as I do reasonable and selfish people.

We can't cut our way to prosperity.

I'd be close to that, too. Learn to live with less, destroy less, invest wisely, improve life for all.

Most people seem to have one standard for themselves and an entirely different one for others.

Outdoors, if you felt like wading back through a zillion gun-related threads, there's one in which I gave my definition of fiscally responsible. It was something to the effect of being prudent in the expenditure of public funds for things that improved the economy and general well-being, and is supported by the collection of revenue sufficient to avoid excessive recurring deficits.
