Thus why I have said that advancement must be either in the company or funding which allows them to attend college so to advance into another career. How does this profit you? Because they will have a better chance of advancing themselves economically, this in turn means that their buying power improves and they buy more... This means more jobs to provide the increased demand. More jobs locally means more people to buy from you. This is upward supply and demand. How long until you see a return? 20 plus years. This is why you won't invest into the future. Don't worry, you aren't alone and that is why we as a nation will fail.

If the north cared so much about the plight of the salves why did they wait so long to do something about it, and why after the civil war did it take so long to do anything about civil rights. And When the Civil War ended, 19 of 24 Northern states did not allow blacks to vote. Nowhere did they serve on juries . They could not give testimony in 10 states, and were prevented from assembling in two. Several western states had prohibited free blacks from entering the state. Blacks who entered Illinois and stayed more than 10 days were guilty of "high misdemeanor." Even those that didn't exclude blacks debated doing so and had discriminatory ordinances on the local level.

" Maritimers, did anyone actually tell you he does not want to advance financially? Maybe you are paraphrasing? Lots of people don't want to be on call 24/7, or don't want to relocate when they have kids in school, or don't want to work unlimited hours on a fixed salary. I've hardly ever met a person who " is not interested in advancing". But most people are wary of being exploited.

You seem to acknowledge that the underlying cause of the civil war was slave-related, but it is important to you to demonstrate that the north was motivated more by practical economic reasons than moral ones. Fair enough. Applying this logic, consider what libs say about Iraq: If Iraq did not have oil, the first Bush would never have intervened. Therefore the first Iraq war was not about preventing a rogue dictator from invading a neighboring state, it was only about oil. The "causes" of any complex decision or event are generally wide and varied. The decision makers are usually influenced from multiple sources advancing different agendas. Even if the slave issue came to a head only because of the north's economic motivations, the fact remains that it did come to a head.

It is cheaper to pay a low wage, than it is to maintain property. Slave owners had to provide food, shelter, and medical care to keep their investment in top shape. Slaves were safer then the free blacks in cities like NYC, where they were hanged at random by the gangs. At least 100 blacks were killed during the NYC riots, and they were killed by the Yankees just because they were black.
