Although I'll agree that the gun theme can only be loosely tied in to the Mexican story. About all you had there were asshole border patrol agents with guns (if you remember when the border patrol asked the hispanic guy to get out of the car he made a big deal out of putting his hand on his holstered gun). Overall though I'd say it was just another poor Hollywood script.

In the Japanese story, guns were nowhere to be seen, except for the fact that the viewer is told that the father of the girl was a hunter, and gave his gun as a gift...etc, etc. But the Japanese story doesn't directly involve guns in any shape or form. The North African story obviously involves the (mis)use of guns, no question there. The US-Mexican story, again, had nothing to do with guns (as far as I can remember). I guess we all come to a movie with our own biases, but I didn't see guns as being a central theme, although guns play an obvious role in the movie as a whole. The theme I saw that transcended places had to do with the power of the state (formal "authority"). And yet I have to admit that in the Japanese story this theme is barely existent. In that story, "authority" only shows up in the form of the investigative detective, and he is so respectful and proper that I just couldn't see him as representing any form of state repression. But maybe it's just the Japanese culture being worlds apart from ours...

User Details are only visible to members.	Actually I think the story was supposed to be primarily about the Japenese girl and the theme was guns. Remember her mother shot herself, probably because she was stuck at home raising a deaf-mute daughter while the father was always off hunting. This likely is what caused the girl to feel isolated and constantly seeking attention (love) from whomever. But I'm not sure how that can be tied into the act of the father giving the rifle away, which is what leads to all the other drama. I think that is the weak link in the film.

"thinly disguised political statement about how the US Boarder Patrol, the US State Department and guns in general are bad, Mexican immigrants and Islamic goat herders are good. I am still not sure what the deaf Japanese teen nymphomaniac had to do with the story though" I went to see Babel with high expectations, and of course expectation is often a prelude to disappointment. And Babel was no exception. But in fairness to Babel, a movie would have to be quite a masterpiece to satisfy a viewer who comes to it with high expectations. The guy who made this movie is the same one who made Amores Perros (sorry, I don't remember the translation to English; maybe something like Love's a Bitch?). Amores Perros is one of those movies that manages to intertwine present and past and future, in a way that makes absolutely no sense in a moment to moment basis, and yet at the end of the movie everything is perfectly clear. The only other movie that I have seen that manages to do something like this is Purple Fiction (hence I always think of Amores Perros as the Mexican version of Purple Fiction). So I went to see Babel thinking I would be treated to that kind of mental trickery, and eventual reward. But Babel isn't that kind of film. Instead, the places (US-Mexico, Northern Africa, Japan) are the main basis for differientiation, rather than the time (past, present, future). I can't explain why, but it didn't have the same effect on me. I think I enjoy more seeing a single story, while being jerked around backward and forward in time, than seeing three loosely related but thematically separated stories (which is what Babel does). Of the three stories in Babel, I enjoyed the North African the most. That one, of course, is where the most important action occurs. I appreciated the agony of the nanny in the US-Mexican story, but I didn't feel like I learned much from it. As far as the Japanese story, I think the movie could have been done without it, but I did get a kick out of some of the scenes involving the shocking behaviors of the horny teen girl. To me, the main role of the Japanese portion of the movie was to provide a break from the increasingly tense moments in the other two stories. The common thread in both of those stories was the harsh nature of state authority, and the plight of common people when forced to confront it. I would give Babel a 3 in a 4-point scale. Mr. Content

User Details are only visible to members.	Domestic Gross (US/Canada) for the Animated movie Cars: Approximately $270 million. The COMBINED Domestic Gross (US/Canada) for all 5 Oscar nominated movies: Approximately $284 million. (The Departed dominated most of that take with approximately $131 million in gross). Yet, Hollyweird still does not get that the majority in America predominately goes to the movies to be entertained, NOT preached or lectured to through some director(s), actor(s) or writer(s) political, social or (non)religious based biased views. ...and yet Hollyweird complains about declining Box Office receipts. For those that own, operate and manage their own business, if you would run your business like much of Hollyweird you would no longer be in business.
