Just 1 small State:

WV Forrestry Service:

Did you know there are more trees today than ever before? West Virginia has over 7 million more acres of forested land than it did in 1910. Our forests continue to grow at a rate that provides for continued harvesting while sustaining the forest resource for future us and enjoyment. This keeps the cycle of growth, harvest and renewal alive!

West Virginia currently has more wildlife than at any time since the mid - 1930's. West Virginia's forestlands are the source of about 400 native brook trout streams. Timber harvesting creates a condition that is critical to the habitat of turkey, grouse, rabbit and nearly every other wildlife species.

The members of the West Virginia Forestry Association work hard to protect our forests, and all that they mean to us. After all, forestry touch all of us!

Just 1 example of how well we manage our natural resources, Today there are more trees in the US than when America was discovered. We do a very good job now, the rest of the world sucks at it.

The un- official, traditional, legal, cultural, and political identity of a tree, rock, forest, mountain, or body of water is as a "natural resource", that is; property to be managed. As modern research shows more and more; these things are not isolated resources at all but a vital part of ALL the transactions any of us participate in- just as we are a vital part of their extended "bio- economic" circle- with numerous possible positive and negative outcomes. It can be argued what is in the best interests of a tree or stream, as they seem to have a will inherent in their nature. Viruses are a perfect example: they may not even be alive to have goals. Is it not our duty (some say god- given duty, see Genesis 2:15 & 19) to act as stewards for these things, and protect their interests against those of competitors? Compensating a tree is ridiculous, true, but what about guaranteeing a certain amount of enviromental preservation in exchange for any development?

1st topic (or post your own): Is it possible to redirect our enviromental paradigm from one of resources management to one of stewardship (or some other) w/o abandoning capitalism on some or all levels?....

NO...one reason is that no matter what the US does the rest of the world will not follow and we cannot make a difference by ourselves. Look at what it has already cost America in lost jobs and $'s, did it slow global warming? NO

What I mean by the R&D taking so long compared to those examples is that in order to make a real difference it needs to be a paradigm shift that would have ramifications in all walks of life. Our lifestyle is SO fundamentally artificially subsidized, be it the price of oil to the 30+ choices I have in toothpaste! It would be a monumentous endeavor to just DEFINE what waste means in this century, nevermind what to do about it. One of my favorites is a school of thought called Process Theory (Alfred North Whitehead, amongst others) . I think it's a useful trend in the right direction.

Did you hear the next democrat proposal since they lost on SCHIF? Now they want to do SCHEF, to allow everyone in America to have a personal chef.

I don't believe that R&D would take that long.

With sufficient resources, we did the atom bomb in about 4 years.

With sufficient resources, we went from Sputnik in 1957 to on the moon in 1969.

When we put our minds to it, we can do incredible things in short periods of time.

Again, it is the will.
