I started reading Painted House when it first came out serialized in the Oxford American, but then missed a couple of issues and never got back to it.

I don't read much fiction anyway, and when I do I prefer short stories and poetry to novels. Somewhere I've got a couple of short stories John wrote long ago and sent to me, but which he has never published as far as I know. One is hilarious, about an old Baptist deacon who had to take a urine test when the church went overboard in whipping its deacons into line.

Kat, I had to smile when I read your post... Just last night I was bored and flipping through the channels and ended up finding To Kill a Mockingbird. Then while watching it I was looking for a book to download to my iPad and ended up downloading Grisham's A Painted House which was one of my favorites!

Fun, that's very exciting! THE John Grisham! I've read most of his books (still need to read the Brethren). Loved The Painted House. His writing style is engaging and I love anything written that incorporates history into the story.

As I was going through boxes of books in my closet, came across To Kill a Mockingbird...I think it's time again : )

I met and became friends with John and Renee long before he started writing or became famous. When he finally got a publisher to print up 5,000 copies of his first book, I bought a couple of them just to be friendly, never dreaming that his writing career would ever go anywhere. Years later, someone told me that 1st editions of A Time To Kill that were inscribed with the kind of personal note he wrote in mine, were worth several thousand dollars. Who ever said that reading wasn't profitable? lol
