Threads for critters, gardening, dinner, movies, etc. Does anyone read any more? What are you reading, do you recommend it, and why or why not?

My most recent read is Natasha Trethewey's "Beyond Katrina," a collection of poems and prose about the Mississippi gulf coast. I fell in love with her the first time I met her and heard her read, several years ago. In this work she confronts racism, urban development, and the way in which natural disasters reveal seams in our society. But she does so through observations about individual persons and their experiences. A very good read.

"my favorite Mississippi author, Larry Brown"

I would have guessed Barry Hannah instead of L. Brown. Darker, and crazier. Although Brown certainly had no shortage of tormented characters. RIP, both of them. And Willie M. too.

The Rabbit Factory by my favorite Mississippi author, Larry Brown. His sense of people and place is masterful.

I am reading, We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves, which I have just begun. I am having a bit of trouble sinking in, but I think it is going to be well-worth the effort. This may be one one of those books where I enjoy the story more than the writing.

S Couple, I may have to go back and reread it to give you a better opinion, but some of the advice about jealousy and "issues" was spot on, plus the personal stories. Just thinking in a different way from the "norm" about sex and taking the "sting" out of labels and names.

DD, why have we not met yet;)

S, I have that book, "re-bought" it after I read the copy given to me by a really cool swing friend some years back, and I had passed it on to someone else, and she passed it on...you get the idea. I think we marked in it where we were from, but I have no idea where that copy ended up, so I bought myself another to keep.

I can't wait to get lasik. My eyes get too tired and my glasses just aren't doing the job at night...and I HAVE TO read every night, even if we've had a swing party and no one goes home till 4 or 5:00AM, I still have to unwind by reading.

I read Room last year and loved it though it haunted me.

It was originally written as teen fiction, my new favorite genre. Not only are they quick easy reads, but I find the female characters strong and creative.

I recently finished The Fault in Our Stars which was fabulous and am in the middle of the Christy serious which are readable but won't be memorable long-term.

I was so sick of the wimpy, whiny adult characters in the books for our book club!

Recovering from surgery and it's complications is at least giving me quality reading time!
