A candidate for Orlando City Council has a rap sheet that includes 21 arrests, records show.

Regina Hill, 48, said she has no plans to drop her political campaign for a council seat, despite a history of arrests for drug offenses, multiple DUIs and other charges. In fact, she said her checkered past makes her more qualified to represent District 5, which still struggles with high levels of crime, unemployment and homelessness.

"There is no better leader to be the voice of the people of District 5, because I've walked in their shoes," Hill said. "I've overcome those obstacles and I know what they go through."

Florida Department of Law Enforcement records show that Hill began racking up arrests a week after she turned 18 in 1983. She was last arrested in 2009, on a contempt of court charge.

During that 26-year span, she was charged with an array of offenses. In 1989, at age 23, she was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to sell. Records show she received a four-month jail sentence and three years probation, with credit for time already served. Hill also had six arrests for driving under the influence between 1997 and 2006.

Other arrests include passing bad checks in 1994, to which she pleaded no contest and was ordered to pay restitution; and marijuana possession in 2005, to which she pleaded no contest and was ordered to perform community service.

Florida is one of three states that strips those with felony convictions of the right to vote, serve on juries — or hold public office. Most of the charges Hill faced were misdemeanors, but two were felonies: the cocaine conviction and a 1995 fraud arrest for using a false name to obtain a driver's license.

State records show that Hill applied to have her civil rights restored, and the request was granted in 2008 by the Florida Parole Commission's Office of Executive Clemency. That cleared the way for her current City Council campaign.

Apparently they have a different attitude towards this sort of thing in France. I believe here we call it a "hostage situation".

As farm tires were rolled in to block the doorway, two Goodyear managers were trapped in a conference room with angry French workers who were demanding more money in exchange for the inevitable loss of their jobs. The morning "meeting" dragged on into the night, and the union said it was settling in for the long haul — with the two executives still captive inside.

Goodyear has tried to shutter the plant in Amiens for five years without success. Its latest attempt was met Monday with a "boss-napping" — a French negotiating tactic that had largely faded away after the height of the economic crisis in 2009.

"Clearly it was no longer possible to keep fighting for our jobs," Mickael Wamen, the union president, told LCI television. "So we decided to change tactics and fight for the largest compensation possible."

In exchange for freeing the bosses, they're demanding an 80,000-euro ($108,000) severance package plus 2,500 euros ($3,400) for each year worked.

Mills College is bowing to requests by a BGLT group to discourage use of gender-specific pronouns such as "he" and "she," in the belief that such pronouns have the effect of defining people by their gender instead of as individuals.

The irony is that Mills College only accepts women students.

I'm trying to think of the last thing he said that didn't make me I'll and I can't. So it's nice to see him say something which didn't.

What are you applauding? That he finds assault wrong? Did you think he was in favor of that sort of thing?

Explain why his being against this behavior is shocking to you?

Holy Shit I'm applauding Al Sharpton. I don't know if that means I should buy a lottery ticket or if the sky is falling. I'm removing some of the commentary in the article which is really directed at things he *didn't* say. I don't like backhanded compliments, and this isn't one.

Aside: Some have questioned whether or not this "knockout game" is a real phenomenon or just the next moral panic. I don't exactly know, but whatever.

Rev. Al Sharpton condemned “knockout” attacks Saturday.

“This kind of behavior is deplorable and must be condemned by all us,” he said at his weekly National Action Network meeting in Harlem. “We would not be silent if it was the other way around. We cannot be silent or in any way reluctant to confront it when it is coming from our own community.”

On Monday, Sharpton and other leaders plan to discuss a “next move.”

“Kids are randomly knocking out people [from] another race — some specifically going at Jewish people,” he said. “This kind of insane thuggery — there is nothing cute about that. There is no game play about knocking somebody out, and it is not a game. It is an assault and is bias, and it is wrong.”
