"....yeah, but ya get to deduct that on your federal returns. for whatever that's worth. "

NJNY: In WV it's worth absolutely nothing. Personal Property Taxes paid (including vehicles) and vehicle registrations are non-deductible and I have yet to see it make a difference when itemizing Federal Taxes. The fruckers here even want to know what lawn equipment we have and yes, we even get to pay taxes on dogs.

This story is made extra-confusing because the assault victim's name is "White". The story doesn't specify but the assailant is American Indian.

(Alberta) Provincial court Judge Harry Van Harten, in a written decision, said Tamara Crowchief’s motivation for striking Lydia White was not related to racial bias.

Crown prosecutor Karuna Ramakrishnan, who had sought a sentence of 12 to 15 months, argued Crowchief’s unprovoked attack last Nov. 1, amounted to a hate crime.

But Van Harten agreed with defence counsel Adriano Iovinelli that there was insufficient evidence to establish Crowchief attacked White because of the colour of her skin.

Van Harten said unlike offenders in several cases cited by Ramakrishnan, there was no suggestion Crowchief was associated with any group that promoted hatred toward a specific race.

“The offender said, ‘I hate white people’ and threw a punch,” Van Harten said in his ruling.

“There is no evidence either way about what the offender meant or whether . . . she holds or promotes an ideology which would explain why this assault was aimed at this victim,” he said.

“I am not satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt that this offence was, even in part, motivated by racial bias.”

White was outside Jaimieson’s pub on 17th Avenue S.W., with a friend when an acquaintance of Crowchief’s approached and asked for, and was given, a cigarette.

As White and her male friend spoke to that woman, Crowchief approached and, without warning, yelled “I hate white people” and punched her in the face, knocking out a tooth.

Crowchief and the woman then walked away, but White and her friend followed and called police, who arrived a short time later and arrested the offender.

During her arrest, Crowchief told police “the white man was out to get her.”

Hmmm,

Interesting topic. We have color coded license plate tabs here in Washington with the month on them large enough that I can read them without my glasses. Sounds like PG may have the same where she lives which is why the cops know when to pull her over. Though I'm sure I would forget without the notices. Those are sent out by the County auditor. They get a couple of bucks out of the tab fee for the service. Or you can got to a private license concessionaire and they get the couple of bucks instead. Tabs run $30-60 depending on tonnage.

We used to have personal property taxes on cars here. They were repealed by initiative. I voted against it. It was about 1% of the blue book (a bit of an inflated value). My feeling was that if you can afford a $100,000 car, you can afford a grand in annual tab fees. I would have been fine with half that amount but you have to get taxes from somewhere and that one seemed like a decent sliding scale. BTW we have no income tax here, which is awesome.

The really stupid part of the repeal - as opposed to a reduction - was that the fees were dedicated to road maintenance and ferries, with about 20% to local law enforcement. Things that generally worked well and people generally wanted. The idea from the geniuses behind the repeal seemed to be : "We think the government are a bunch of wasteful idiots. So we'll blow a billion dollar hole in the transportation budget and they'll naturally become smart and efficient and re-direct money from wasteful programs to this part of the budget that works." The results have been predictable.

It cost $20.00 per year inspection fee.$ 64.00 for a 2 year registration for wife's van. $68.00 for a 2 year registration for my pickup. $1600.00 for the 2 vehicles per year for insurance. Plus sales tax when you buy it.

"In Virginia, a personal property tax was applied to cars. Our BMW was over $1,000 per year when it was new. "

that is how ours is too. We had a pretty new truck (that when we bought it used was 30,000+) and our brand new car which while not fancy cost us 18,000. Didn't think about when November rolled around and we would be hit with a combined registration renewal for them both. it was crazy...I wanna say like 1,200 on the truck and about 800 on the car. Plus of course the payments on them both which combined were 1,100. And the way they have the system set up we can't pay the registration on one without paying the other to at least space them by a month.
