I will make the same argument against playing college athletes I do when discussing owner vs players in pro sports disputes. To wit:

Players play for 1-4 years in college and the average in the pros is what, like 3-5 years? The pros make millions in that time, retire and assuming they take care of their finances (most do not) are set for life. College athletes either go pro and earn millions or have the opportunity to earn a degree for free (most do not).

The universities and the pro owners have to replace said athletes each and every year, pay coaches, trainers administrators...pay for facilities including training centers and new stadiums so people will continue to come back every year and are responsible for the health and well being of all of them.

In other words, the owners and universities are in it for the long haul while the athletes can cash in and be done in a few years. If a HS kid doesn't want to get a free education to play sports, then go pay and attend like everyone else. If a pro player doesn't want to earn "only" $2.5M a year when he thinks it should be $3M, he has the option of getting a real job.

BTW, anyone missing the NBA?

Nope, me neither.

D-1 sports are big business, especially football & basketball, these kids have huge workloads between school, practice, competitions and trying to have a personal life. and the schedule during the season is increased in the off season, NCAA sports are a full time job and go all year long. To all those who say "Well they are getting a free education" do the math, look at the millions the universities earn off the athletes then figure out what that scholarship cost them in actual cash, the profit for the schools is staggering. A few commentators have suggested a plan to pay the student/athletes, in which I agree, being a former D-1 athlete I have experienced this system, and it's no picnic, and now with the schools changing conferences like underwear based on economic windfalls why shouldn't the athletes get a slice of the pie, without them there is no show.

L, we already have that down here on NSD. Most college booster clubs have huge NSD parties, with live feeds from high schools where key recruits announce their decisions. Some folks take this stuff way seriously.

Sadly it will probably end up one day similar to the NFL Draft day, where they get players to all announce where they are going on live TV...It is going to ruin the sport, slowly but surely

L, college football is getting to be more and more about the money, primarily from TV deals.

Down here they are joking about changing National Signing Day, to start calling it Draft Day.

West Virginia is suing Big East Conference in order to leave for Big 12. That's just sad.

Rob Ryan was DC in Cleveland the past couple of years and it seems like he would have two or three great games a year (he shut down the Patriots one year) but the rest of the time was completely over-matched.
