The NY Times rarely covers southern sports, but I noticed this story last week about Marshall Henderson, the colorful Ole Miss shooting guard who led the SEC in scoring. nytimes. com/2013/03/19/sports/ncaabasketball/marshall-henderson-leads-ole-miss-into-ncaa-tournament.html?pagewanted=all&_r=4& Henderson is playing at his fourth college in four years, and is drawing attention for his antics and attitude as much as his prolific scoring. He is the kind of player that people either hate or wish he were on their team, or both. When the SEC coaches left him off the All-SEC first team despite him leading the conference in scoring, he declared them "a bunch of losers," then proceeded to back it up by leading an upset of the top-seeded Florida Gators in the SEC championship game, while mocking the Florida fans with their own "gator chomp." He thrives on taunting opposing players and fans. He trolled the Missouri team so bad that the Missouri coach spent an entire timeout whining to the refs about him, instead of huddling with his own team. Henderson responded by scoring 27 en route to an upset win. In that game, Henderson had a sub-par outing, scoring "only" 15 points. But he had gotten into the Auburn players' heads so much that in the final seconds of a tie game, an Auburn player shoved Henderson even though he was nowhere near the ball. Henderson calmly sank two free throws to win the game. Henderson denies any ill will, saying that his passion for playing the game "makes me a little cra-cra." He's a little crazy off the court too. Once, he appeared for a post-game press conference where reporters were waiting to ask him about another amazing performance. He announced only that "It's Saturday night; I'm out of here," then left. When asked early in the season why he doesn't like mid-week games, he declared that they interfere with White Girl Wednesdays. He's been known to tweet his score in beer pong at 4:00 in the morning. The impressive thing about Henderson's play is that he is supremely confident that even his most impossible shots will make. He went cold in his first NCAA tournament game, with shot after shot rimming out or just missing. Undeterred, he kept shooting and finally got hot, scoring 17 points in the last 10 minutes to pace an upset of Wisconsin. Even Labron James took note, tweeting "that Ole Miss dude has the greenest light in history." He plays again tonight in a battle of Cindarella teams, 12th seed Ole Miss against 13th seed LaSalle. Should be fun.

I think of the time when Michael Jordan played with a bad cold and made that game winning shot, or football players that played through bad sprains and broken bones, or Kerri Strug-- the gymnast who had a bad sprain and landed her vault with one leg on her way to winning the gold medal. And poor Rory couldn't defend his title because his tooth hurt. (I do think it's funny that when he changed equipment for a lucrative endorsement deal, his game immediately went into the crapper.)

Arguably the nation’s best highschool linebacker, the highly sought-after recruit verbally committed to sign with Alabama a year ago, then abruptly switched his commitment to arch-rival Auburn in December. To demonstrate the solidity of his decision, he had a large Auburn logo tattooed on his arm. Then, on national signing day, he abruptly flipped back to Alabama and signed a binding letter of intent to bring his considerable football skills –and his tattoo of arch-rival Auburn—to Tuscaloosa. Foster prolly will not be a Rhodes Scholar finalist. Reportedly, he has trouble spelling his own name, sometimes writing it Reuben and other times Rueben. So it comes as no surprise that, when he decided in January to honor the memory of his deceased cousin Ladarious Perkins by getting a tattoo of Perkins’ name, he mis-spelled it. Then, the week after signing day, Foster’s teacher caught him sleeping through class and made him spend the rest of the class standing up at his desk. Undeterred, he fell asleep again, standing, but bent over his desk at an odd-looking angle.
