By point differential and strength of schedule, OKC is almost 2 points better than SA, and SA is a bit better than Miami.
Due perhaps to strength of remaining schedule, OKC is likely to have home court vs SA, so they're about twice as likely to make it to the Finals.

For several years, the Spurs always managed to crank it up for the playoffs; but not lately. They're just too old.
Miami and OKC have the 2 best players in the game, by far. Their sidekicks are pretty darn good, too.

I wonder how they came up with those numbers. San Antonio and OK City are currently tied, but both are a few games back from the Heat. New York and Indiana are wayyyyyyyy back from Miami.

If a team (the Heat, say) are 95% likely to win round 1, 85% in round 2, and 75% in round 3: they're 60% likely to get to the Finals.

Yeah, but those teams in the East with no superstars don't have great records. Sure, in a short series they could pull an upset. But overall they just don't play well over the long haul.

But I do agree that superstars don't guarantee anything. The Grizzlies traded their leading scorer Rudy Gay for Tayshaun Prince and have been playing better since then.

Well, the Heat are 1-2 vs both Chicago and Indiana, 1-3 vs NY.
They've been considerably better vs the West (25-5) than against the East (34-11)

These are small sample sizes, but they point up the possibility of a loss any time one of the Heat stars is not having a great game. Most teams run a lot deeper, and they have guys off the bench who would start for Miami.

Honestly, the East is so weak, the only way a team other than the Heat make it to the finals is if LeBron gets injured.

And if some other team in the East does make the Finals, they get swept in four games.

Well, some teams are 'top heavy' -- meaning they depend a lot on one or two superstars.
These percentages are based on teams' performance so far, and on some thousands of simulations. The Pacers and the Knicks are not so superstar-dependent, so they might have an even better chance than those listed.

The same simulator gives Miami a 60% chance of coming out of the East. And upon reaching the Finals, about 50-50 that they win it.

Both the Thunder and the Spurs are winning 2/3 of their Finals, should they get there.

I'd take every Eastern team off that list but the Heat.

The West has five teams that have a legitimate shot at the finals.

I found these chances for NBA teams to win the Finals:
OKC 33%
Miami 28%
Spurs 17%
Clipps 7.6%
Pacers 5%
Knicks 3.2%
Denver 2.2%
Grizz 1.6%
Houston 1.4%
others total 1.5%
