"Then given that criteria whether or not he wins in a week, it must surely be TB12."

No. There are ties right now. You could have tie breakers but then you get into the bullshit again

Grey areas are, by definition, not the same as clear fouls. Not getting called for interference is not the same as intentionally tripping someone in a way designed to evade detection (obviously tougher to do with twenty cameras on you in the NFL than in an amateur game). Hurting someone by accident is not the same as kicking them when you get up after the play.

I got beat by lots of players Scamp, a lot of whom beat me clean. I also got beat by bullies who pounded my head into the pavement because they were bigger than me, petty bureaucrats and college professors who were fucked up people and intoxicated by their power, unscrupulous business rivals with more money or better lawyers, "friends" who turned out not to be. That's life. That's what we have to find a way to deal with or decide we can let go of. Sports is supposed to be better than that. "It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game" is what they tell us as kids. We may love sports but we don't "need" them like we need a job, or a degree, or a building permit. That's the magic of sports. If they lose their magic we can walk away. I think sports leagues get this and are right to be concerned about it.

Since I might be getting way too out there in philosophy land let me frame it this way: Pete Rose. Amazing player, no? Should he be in the hall of fame or is the league right? I say they are. The magic matters.

"one of the best" is different than the best. Anyway. we have come up with a SuperBowl to determine the best team and every team wants to win it and the QB leads the team. So IMO the best quarterback EVER, not one of the best, is the one who lead their team to the most rings.

Chez, so true. You have to look at their whole body of work not just SB rings. I am not knocking Elway, because Elway was one of those players that no matter what the score he tried to find a way to win. Aikmen was a great game manager which at the time was not a 'thing'. In today's game the QB position requires an almost MIT graduates brain to read complex and ever changing defensive schemes. Watch a QB at the line pre snap.- thatbis insane how they change the play when they see what they have, changevit back after the defense adjusts to his adjustment and then post snap (on passing downs) havjngvto do quick reads of all his options . And oh yeah no you have no time and you are going to be punished after you do it . QBs in the 80/90s didnt have it as hard. Granted they took a harder punishment and hit because of what the rules are. Latter day they could party it up and be celebrities, in today's game their season is year round and they have tonbe dedicated for longevity.

The other main factor for me is the era.

No way you can really make a comparison between Johnny U or Lenny Dawson, or even Terry Bradshaw, with the QB's of today. The rules are just completely different.

Hell, they might as well dress the receivers and QB's in tutus now.

Interesting I just heard a critique on these two yesterday on Sports Radio (Aikman and Elway). One knock was Aikman never performed well in poor weather games (rain or cold). I think the guy was one of the best pure pocket passers and had a cannon arm. Elway, cannon arm and wasn't afraid to run when he had to.... But measuring the best by rings? Come on Man... then Johnny U or Dan Marino wouldn't be one of the best?

"So best will be who holds the most rings. "

I can only partially agree with that. As TBR said you need to look at the totality of their work. Football is the sport most dependent on teammates and coaches for success. No one person can dominate when there are 22 (or 53) players a side and the game is so much more complex than other sports.

BUT Aikman is better than Elway because he has more rings! Period.
