User Details are only visible to members.	I'm so glad to hear that several of you have power again. I know that's just one step in the recovery process but an important one! The Steelers have decided to fly in on Sunday before the game and fly back after. Traveling on game day is pretty unheard of in the NFL but their normal NYC hotel has no power and they didn't want to get rooms elsewhere & displace NYC residents. Kat & VA - thank you!

User Details are only visible to members.	In 1998, we lived through the North American Ice Storm, which put a 5-inch thick layer of ice on everything. The damage was catastrophic. Those huge high-voltage transmission towers came down under the weight. To this day driving through the countryside of eastern Ontario/southwestern Quebec/northern Vermont you just see mile after mile of trees broken and twisted. We lost power for 9 days. In January. In Canada. Nobody could go anywhere because the roads were covered in ice. Besides, you couldn't get into your car. It was coated in 5 inches of ice too, and glued to the pavement with 5 inches of ice, the tailpipe sealed off with 5 inches of ice - you get the idea. Candlelight huddled under blankets was a bit of fun for a couple of days, then it really began to suck. When the power came back on, we hosted Mrs. VA's father and sisters, who had to wait until about day 16 to get his power back. Some people didn't get power back for TWO MONTHS. The good part of the whole thing was that several days of not being able to leave the house and having no electricity (and hence, no TV, internet - but our phone did work) meant that we were getting 10-11 hours of sleep a night. We passed the time by reading books, playing board games, etc. In some ways, it was a great time for us to spend as a family. Oh - might I add - 9 months later... there was a significant spike in newborns....

User Details are only visible to members.	We're back on the grid too. Generator is off!! Fireplace is dark. Funny thing is, I'm afraid to use the electric! the house is dark and I'm still using candles. Hubby says we're shell shocked, lol. I don't think I knew how much electricity we used. Well, our bill sure did, but I didn't. I do now. I've vowed to get our electrical usage down 40% starting now. I just started watching the hurricane concert on dvr. I couldn't do it, all I do is cry. This concert showed clips I haven't seen before, it felt unbearable. Maybe I'll watch it tomorrow. We are so lucky, minimal damage here and in our community. I feel like I have survivors guilt tho..... Until last night, finally being able to watch the news and be online, I didn't even know how many people have died and its still climbing. This is not over, nor will it be any time soon, for many many people. I just can't seem to get back to normal life yet knowing that.

User Details are only visible to members.	lc -- how correct you are--there is no other place like the 5 boroughs of NYC.. it IS the greatest city in the world and it will continue to evolve, further diversify, and be THE true world class city. As usual, it is those who are the least familiar with NYC are also the ones who criticize it... Just like those who, despite years of rejection, chronically seek the attention of those who disdain them for the poor character traits they display on the pages of social media. Law enforcement is now patrolling the barrier islands and enforcing a mandatory evaulation order for those who continue to refuse to leave. The barrier islands will not be habitable for at least several months... Be safe.. Donations to the Red Cross are benefitting those impacted by the storm regardless of their location. V

User Details are only visible to members.	i have seen so many things happened in NYC, starting from the '77 blackout until present. one thing i can say is that new york will rise. this may be the most difficult of all. the devastation is amazing. unless you see it with your own eyes, is even difficult to explain. i think lots of people has a very bad impression about new york. maybe way back i would have had the same impression, but new york has changed quite a bit. and it seems when new york is put to a test, a challenge, it always rises to the occasion. if this would have happened in any other place, it would have been over. but give a bit of time and it will rise to be even bigger and better. as much as sometimes i disagree with the city and bitch and moan about the bullshit going on, but you have to love NYC.(btw there is no fricking gas here).

I saw that M, It made me sick seeing reports that people were being forced out of hotel rooms all over the city to make room for runners, and people associated with the marathon..... There is even a report that the Steelers were having trouble finding hotle rooms for the game this weekend. Maybe they should look at postponing the game if it is an issue as well. People should have a little time to get some sense of normalcy back in thier lives after such recent events....
