"My PP isn't with people who use slang when writing, it's when they get it completely wrong. "

Exactly.

It's like an email we got that said "Can share pixs" (seriously, that's all they wrote). While such an email would be ignored from anyone short of Scarlett Johnannsen, they double down on stupid by not using either of the two acceptable slang short forms for "pictures".

Sorta, gonna, gotta, woulda, coulda, shoulda, etc, etc, etc, are more or less "accepted" forms of spoken slang and aren't really looked down upon if used in informal written text.

My PP isn't with people who use slang when writing, it's when they get it completely wrong.

It's never *right* to say "sorta", but in casual conversation it can be used to denote a less formal tone.

But it's deliberate, not a sign that I'm too stupid to know that it should be "sort of".

"Um, I didn't know anyone WROTE it that way. Since they're saying "Should've" (which now that I think about it isn't written down very often) it *sounds* like "should of". But I guess I always thought people knew what it was. Apparently not."

Wow. I'm honestly surprised you've never noticed this before. There are certain forumers who are guilty of doing this quite a bit, actually. Not to mention, but if you have a "cyber life" anywhere outside of SLS (like facebook) then I can't imagine that you've never seen it before. I'm gonna guess that you have, but just never noticed it because it's something that reads the same way it sounds out loud.

I see it all the time on facebook and in the forums...though I don't see it as often in the forums since I stopped posting in the political threads. Still, it drives me up a wall when I do see it.

"I'm guilty of coulda, shoulda, woulda"

This is basically slang and it's no different than saying (or writing) something like "I'm gonna do this." or "I've gotta do that." which is totally different than writing "should of" in place of "should have." When someone actually writes/types out "should of" it indicates that they actually think that's how it's said out loud.

I don't fault anyone for writing in slang, as long as they actually get it right. BTW...."woulda, shoulda, coulda" would not get you mocked by me. I try not to make slang a regular part of my writing, but I still do it from time to time. Either because I'm being lazy or because it might better emphasize the "tone" of a particular comment or point I'm trying to make. A few slang words here and there would probably tend to make my comments seem a little less serious.

I'll even write "shoulda" sometimes. But it's like "ain't" - I'll use it for *effect*, when appropriate, but I know it ain't a word.

p.s. someone brought Cheetos to the part Saturday. No lie.

I'm guilty of coulda, shoulda, woulda...stuff like that. But I should have known one day it would be an issue. lol

"I should of gone to that party."

Um, I didn't know anyone WROTE it that way. Since they're saying "Should've" (which now that I think about it isn't written down very often) it *sounds* like "should of". But I guess I always thought people knew what it was. Apparently not.
