"What do cell phones have to do with anything?"

Uh, because you asked why toll free numbers still existed. Many people in Ruraltown, USA still keep a basic landline (with no long distance) when they live in areas that have little/no cell phone coverage.

My mom is a perfect example of this. She has a local land line and a cell phone. There's no cell service in her house (it picks up about a mile down the road) so the only way to reach her is to call her land line when she's home. She doesn't make long distance calls from her house.

My dad is the same actually. He lives in NC in a mountain valley. You have to drive a good 10 miles to get signal. He also keeps a land line for incoming calls and to make local outgoing calls.

Both of them keep a calling card handy incase they need to make a long distance call from home. They recharge their cards by calling the 800 number on the back of it.

And I know almost no one who has a land line with unlimited long distance. In fact, the only people I know who even have a land line are people who live in areas that get poor cell signal. But none of them have unlimited long distance.

But this has inspired a JW on my part.

JW: Who pays for unlimited long distance through their phone/cable provider? T

And NO you do not need a 1-800 number to call Mumbai toll free provided a local number will route there.

Ugh. Never mind. Jesus. If the point is "not everyone has unlimited long distance on their land lines", OK.

BTW I love the city name Bangalore... If I lived in India, that's where I'd want to live ;)

**Just because you're talking to someone in Hyderabad doesn't mean you called there. **

Of course it does. You might have not called directly, but indeed you are talking to someone sitting in a call center in Secunderabad ;).

Let's simplify this.

Toll free numbers still exist because not everyone has a cell phone or lives in an area that has cell phone coverage.

Just because you're talking to someone in Hyderabad doesn't mean you called there. You call a US-based 1-800 number and it's routed overseas. 1-800 numbers are all based in the US/Canada/Caribbean. The 1-XXX-XXX-XXXX format is only in North America. A 1-757 number can just as easily be routed overseas as a 1-800 number.

Also, just because something is a 1-800 number doesn't mean it's toll free from anywhere. Some 1-800 numbers are toll free just in the US, or Canada, or US and Canada, or anywhere in the NANP area.

Unlimited long distance to other states, and sometimes Canada. But never overseas. Overseas as in, Israel, England, Russia other countries, you always have to pay.

I have no idea what you're trying to say. I know that if you call overseas, whether via cell or landline, you have to pay long distance charges. Majority of the 800 numbers are somewhere in Bangalore and Mumbai.

I wasn't talking about cell vs land lines. We have always had a land line and have had unlimited domestic long distance as long as we've lived in this country. It's been standard wherever we've been.
