@ BLT - Questioning a religious teaching is not hostility, it's curiosity. I have had a question since childhood that I never got a reasonable answer to (and still haven't) therefore I have to assume it's another of those "blind faith" things. That's fine for those that want to have blind faith but i do not have that kind of faith, never have and never will. I doubt it has anything to do with my mother being a poor catholic or my sister being the best Christian I've ever seen. I'm very different from them both.

I don't think I have hostility towards you BUT I do think you are hypocritical and that makes me not take you seriously when you talk about religion. I understand that no one is perfect but your rant at me for pointing out that you treated that poor aesthetician shabbily over shoes and your refusal to admit that perhaps you overreacted spoke volumes to me. You have insinuated I'm a bitch and a demon though I have not called you names. I attempted to apologize to you for misleading you and wasting your time, you again ranted. I asked a question about why the church doesn't think fish is meat and you took it as a personal attack on you and your faith.

Some stuff to meditate on OR you can rant at me some more.

"while spending the rest of their time belittling others"

Uh oh. If that's the test, I'm going straight to Hell.

@rabbit: I think your hostility towards Christians and possibly ME in particular stems from your experience as noted in your posts with respect to your mother and the way she practiced being Catholic. It's important that we seek for ourselves. The Lord tells us let's reason together. He is the only "holy" one. The rest of us are a bunch of sinners saved by grace.

"As for the "there are different types of vegetarians" I say bullshit."

I would say the same about different types of christians. You know the ones, those who pick and choose what parts of the bible they can twist to defend their choices while essentially treating others like shit. I am more impressed by those who are genuinely good people and treat others with respect and compassion than those who brag about being a christian just because they go to church one day a week while spending the rest of their time belittling others.

Current - thanks for trying to help answer my question.

I understand why Xtians fast. My question, since childhood, is why aren't fish considered meat? I have never gotten a reasonable answer from anyone, not even church officials or religion "experts"

I am forced to assume that, like many church teachings, it's just another way to be *good religious person* without having to suffer too much. Just another heaven loophole.

I guess I'll never know, and that's fine, I just can't stand the hypocrisy that goes along with a lot of this crap.

Rabbit,

I'm not religious but I think the abstinence from meat is supposed to be in honor of Christ's sacrifice (a sacrifice because meat is so much tastier than fish).

It boils down to church dogma, not scripture. Similar to celibacy of the priesthood, or prohibition of female priests. Jesus is not supposed to have said anything about either of those topics. Though I also think the acceptability of eating fish as a substitute is related to the biblical references to fishermen and fish as food (offered by Jesus). The same reason that the fish came to symbolize Jesus.
