"I like to play in events where the lowest score wins"

I just like to play.

Just wondering,

Since there's hardly any phone booths, where does Superman go to change into his costume?

Well, the truth is that I don't mind the golf handicap system. It was designed so that anyone could play a competitive match against anyone else, and when properly used, it works. But not everyone is honest... I don't like people who cheat with their handicap. There are a few in every golf club (called "sandbaggers") who have artificially inflated their handicap to get more strokes (and an unfair advantage) when they play a match.

One guy is particularly annoying... he always wants to play for money, and he wants me to give him the several stroke difference between our handicap (mine is a 2 right now). I like to say to him, "So explain to me why I should give you strokes." Or, "I thought you said you were a conservative... the handicap system in golf is like a liberal entitlement program... for fat, rich, cigar smoking shitty golfers." And, "I worked hard to be a better golfer, and now you want me to just hand over to you the advantage I worked for... you fuckin' liberals make me sick." (He's very conservative and calling him a 'liberal' makes his face turn red)

I like to play in events where the lowest score wins... which are non-handicap or "scratch" events.

There are handicap limits and for the most part, they have little chance of impacting the outcome of a game between 2 players of dramatically opposite skill levels. In other words, there is no handicap out there that would ever allow even the worst golfer in the world to beat Tiger Woods.

The intent to to just bridge the gap. If I'm good and you're just ok, I'd probably beat you 9/10 times playing straight up and I can probably beat you without playing my best game. But if you're handicapped, now I might only win 6/10. Obviously I'm still more skilled than you, but in order to win I've got to stay on my toes and play a cleaner game....which in the long run actually makes both of us better players.

About 27 years ago I joined a daytime bowling league that offered free babysitting. Being a new mom, it sounded like the perfect opportunity to get out of the house and interact with more adults. The fact that my bowling skills absolutely sucked, giving me a "handicap" of something like 90 points, was very embarrassing! I won "worst bowler" trophy that year, and never returned. LOL!

Right... but if you "beat" a better player because of your handicap, you didn't "beat" them at all, did you?

You could give me a 60 point handicap and I'd "beat" Tiger Woods any day, but it would be totally meaningless.

The purpose of handicapping is to try and make the game a little more competitive for weaker players. Granted, if the skill level between 2 players is dramatic then it probably doesn't make a difference, but it's intended to bridge the gap between skilled and unskilled players. Think of it as "sports socialism" for lack of a better term.

I never got the point of handicapping. If I'm playing with a much better golfer, I get my ass kicked. So what? I still enjoy it.

I used to play handball with a national champion-level player. He was far better than me, and always wanted to give me handicap points. I refused. A typical score was 21-2. I was happy if I managed 5 points off of him. I don't think I ever did better than 8.

I play golf with several people who call themselves "conservative" and claim that they are against affirmative action...

I'm just wondering why they always want me to give them handicap strokes. :^/

I started driving right when they were switching over, so some pumps were leaded and some weren't. I accidentally filled my Dad's new truck with leaded gas (it took unleaded fuel only). Didn't seem to cause any problems though.
