FF: The British insert the "I" in aluminum. One of my college roommates was a grad chem major from England. He even pronounced the i. We're good friends to this day. That's probably why I enjoy your posts so much, VA.

Well, that and the fantasy of one day meeting Ms. VA...

I'm going to my kitchen now to check the spelling on my Reynolds Wrap and maybe touch myself a little.

No, it hasn't. It'll take a generation to change that.

Basically, metals (almost) always end their name in -ium. Titanium. Cerium. Rhodium. etc. Aluminum was an oddball in this, but only in the US and Canada. The rest of the world has always called it alumnium.

So basically, a few European countries also used other names for other metals - Germans call tungsten wolfram. Brits spell sulfur "sulphur". Some still call niobium "columbium".

So an agreement was reached - everyone's going to call it "aluminium" now. Everyone will spell sulfur "sulfur". Germans will call it tungsten. etc. You can expect in the next year or two to see aluminum foil boxes labeled with the new (to us - old to everyone else) spelling. But old habits will die hard, for sure.

For some reason - platinum escaped this without being changed to "platinium". Probably because nobody uses that spelling.

Another fun fact: helium was named as such because it was discovered (through spectral lines) on the sun, and initially speculated to be a metal. Helios = sun. -ium = metal. Helium = sun metal.

JW: is it the aluminum in his antiperspirant or the aluminum in his foil hat?

JW if HalFassTroll realizes I never post in the Political Forum.

@TBR, no I was referring to members of the Kumbaya Klub who post happy, happy, happy every day in the regular forum but don't have the intellect to debate a topic without resorting to personal attacks in the Political threads.
