I understand. But she cites a demographics document from the City of Manassas which gives the following numbers for 2015:

White 71.4%

Black 14.3%

Indian/Alaska 0.3%

Asian 5.2%

Hawaiian/Islander 0.1%

Other 4.4%

Two or more 4.2%

Then, a separate table:

Hispanic/Latino: 32.9%.

Someone in this self-styled role ought to know better.

BTW, Manassas is 42.8% White and 34.7% Hispanic in 2015. If you cut the pie that way...

She got it wrong. But there are several other ways that the government reports race/ethnicity.

The Integrated Postsecondary Data System (IPEDS), which almost all higher education institutions report to, does away with the whole Hispanic as a separate category.

If you are Hispanic, that's what you are, despite the second question in the census. Then they cut up the rest according to the second question.

The multi race category is kinda a clusterfuck, too. That category is growing, and taking away primarily from the Black category. Many universities have seen their percentage of Blacks cut in half since implementation.

Is there a way to look up a specific author on HuffPo and explain how census demographics work? They are running a story that says:

"Manassas [Virginia] is overwhelmingly white, with a demographic report by the city showing that 72 percent of the population identified as white and only 33 percent as Latino in 2015. "

The author (and their moron editors) appear to be unaware that the census asks you to identify your race and then asks if you are hispanic/latino (Y/N). Also unaware that 72 + 33 >100.

Fun fact: the author herself is Hispanic.
