TOPIC: In Attics and Closets, 'Biohackers' Discover Their Inner Frankenstein
Created by: sa_interracialcpl
Original Starting post for this thread:
In Massachusetts, a young woman makes genetically modified E. coli in a closet she converted into a home lab. A part-time DJ in Berkeley, Calif., works in his attic to cultivate viruses extracted from sewage. In Seattle, a grad-school dropout wants to breed algae in a personal biology lab.

These hobbyists represent a growing strain of geekdom known as biohacking, in which do-it-yourselfers tinker with the building blocks of life in the comfort of their own homes. Some of them buy DNA online, then fiddle with it in hopes of curing diseases or finding new biofuels.

But are biohackers a threat to national security?

That was the question lurking behind a phone call that Katherine Aull got earlier this year. Ms. Aull, 23 years old, is designing a customized E. coli in the closet of her Cambridge, Mass., apartment, hoping to help with cancer research.

She's got a DNA "thermocycler" bought on eBay for $59, and an incubator made by combining a styrofoam box with a heating device meant for an iguana cage. A few months ago, she talked about her hobby on DIY Bio, a Web site frequented by biohackers, and her work was noted in New Scientist magazine.

That's when the phone rang. A man saying he was doing research for the U.S. government called with a few polite, pointed questions: How did she build that lab? Did she know other people creating new life forms at home?

That's a fact... If one of these geniuses happens upon a cure for something, the FDA will shut them down and they surely will be under the gun for compliance that they surely won't be able to follow!

Devils Advocate Time: There are also a few quality people out there trying to find cures for what ails us. I wonder just how long it will take for the FDA to try and extort these few brave soles?

So did America. While a W48 had a very small yield, it is still very powerful for its size, and a slightly larger W54, weighing just 50 pounds, can deliver up to 6 kt.

Look up "Upshot-Knothole Grable".

"While you can probably get Chlamydia for $100 from a street hooker, it'll cost you $350 from them."

There's something to be said for quality and purity. If I'm looking for a good dose of Hep-C or HSV-2, I don't want it diluted by that clap stuff that often is used as a cheap filler.

There are nasty things everywhere and it's impossible to completely prevent those with a little know-how from making or acquiring them.

You can buy almost anything from the American Type Culture Collection. This is not new.

Typhoid Mary anyone?

I believe I have been saying that this was going on for some time now, mostly in post related to gun control. Either way, to think it isn't on people's radar, is to be foolishly naive. It's on the governments radar, but without stifling science or our privacy rights... There isn't much that can be done about it.

These biologicals can be obtained from many sources and as science advances, so does each of our individual destructive capacity.

In time, the equivalency to a suitcase nuke will be so available to the public, that you would think they were issued at birth. Sadly, someone with a superbug will still trump the nuke... Because biological weapons beat nuclear weapons hands down and five times on Sunday.

The people that lurk in these back rooms with biological weapons, will likely use that weapon we refuse to pay attention to simply because it's not attached to a constitutional right. Well now, don't that just make ya sleep better at night?

I can see it now... Pissed off mental case, can't get his jolly's shooting up a school, decides to stroll into an unmonitored sporting event and release enough of his weaponized fun killing 20 thousand or more innocent people.

It's only a matter of time before these unmonitored, easy to purchase items are released on us.. If you've never seen the results from bio weapons, you'll have nightmares for the rest of your days if you should happen upon such a scene.

Horrifying..
