Our sales tax is 6% here except on food(not ready-to-eat), clothing, drugs, textbooks, resale items and residential heating fuels.

Ours is 8.75% and we live in the middle of nowhere. They instituted a new tax law for the state last year. Removing taxes on things like food and utilities, but raising income taxes for the so called "high income" people. In their little minds high income is as follows:
For people who itemize: $30,000 if filing single and $60,000 if married filing jointly. Non Itemized returns: 40,000 if filing single and 80,000 if married filing jointly. |

4% in Virginia, but we also have an onerous personal property tax that makes you pay tax twice a year on the value of your vehicles and boats!!!

8.25% and our county (Erie) is even talking about raising it another penny. Plus state tax, plus a lousey overall ecomony here ~ WOW we love the Buffalo area. NOT!!! LOL!!! We moved here from Florida five years ago......... We are moving back to Florida....we purchased a lot last year and are in the process of having a house built ~ no state tax ~ beautiful weather year round ~ We personally can't wait to be Floridians again!!!!

But in either state as long as it is prescribed by a medical doctor, it is still tax deductible on your federal income tax. :D

It really is true. If you live in an area where prescriptions are exempt and a physician determines hydro-therapy an appropriate treatment to a chronic medical condition it becomes a fourth class medical apppliance just like eyeglasses, a cane, etc. And yes we just bought an 8 person tub with 64 jets and all the bells and whistles and did not pay sales tax. Big savings.
