If they're taught to be dependent, then that's what they're going to be. Kids catch a lot of flack for their shortcomings these days and most of it is unwarranted, imo. T

It wasn't always the best thing, but when I was 18, I was driving around with my car full of all my earthly possessions, including my prescription for rheumatic fever, looking for a place to spend the night. When we were 18 and out of high school, we were on our own. If we wanted to go to college, it was considered a luxury that we would have to figure out on our own.

Admittedly, I think my generation is pretty bad at parenting. Very over protective, smothering, and lazy. But not lazy as in uninvolved, but laziness that is driven by being over protective. Example: When my oldest was 5, she wanted to make her own sandwich. So I taught her how. She made pretty big mess with mayo and mustard, but she did it. And after a few small messes, she got the hang of it. She also got the hang of cleaning up her messes. Then she goes back to her mom's house and I get a phone call like 3 days later and my daughter is just bawling her eyes out. I ask her why and she's upset because her mom won't let her make a sandwich. I get her mom on the phone and ask why she can't make her own sandwich and she says that she doesn't feel like cleaning up the mess. That's pretty fucking lazy, imo. Obviously that's a minor example, but the trend continued as the kids got older. Gotta give them room to grow and make a few messes. Not only do they learn from their mistakes but they also learn how to clean up after themselves. Seems like a lot of people want their kids to be completely dependent on them and then can't figure out why they grow up to be totally dysfunctional. Sophia, if you come home and the house is still standing and no one went to the ER, consider it a major victory. T

User Details are only visible to members.	Well, we still have to tell him we are going out let alone that we will be gone all night. Haven't seen him yet this morning. He knows now that he is 18, he is responsible for his actions. He still asks me if he can run to the library despite having a vehicle and a license. I tell him that all he has to do is TELL me he's taking off but does not have ASK if he can go. Yet he asks me. The radio station just played two songs that were popular during my proms. Ah the sweet memories of the 80s Sophia

User Details are only visible to members.	Sophia, one thing you might want to verify with your son is whether he is planning to have friends over after the prom. If so, his friends' parents may be assuming there will be parental supervision, and when they find out there isn't, may be quite upset that their kid didn't fully disclose that or lied about it.

User Details are only visible to members.	I am sure it not going to be a big deal. I mean prom doesn't get over with till ......crap, I need to ask him what time it gets over. We have no worries about leaving him home alone. He has no worries about being home alone. It has just never been done before because he and his brother had very boring parents before this all started. If he gets home after 1 am, it isn't like we haven't pulled up after a night out on the swinging town at 3:30 am. It's just all the parents around here are spazzing out because its prom night and they have to be home to make sure their child isn't doing anything wrong. Except, if their child is doing something wrong, it likely is happening away from home, so I don't know. I know they haven't done half of what I did on my prom nights. And certainly not what I have been doing the last couple months, so even if, well, the only concern I have is well.........I don't have any really. Sophia

User Details are only visible to members.	My senior year in HS, my mom decided to buy a house about 3 hrs away from where we were living. Each weekend she'd head up there to do some work on it. She wanted me to spend the weekends at my dad's house but her b/f at the time convinced her otherwise, with the usual "he's 17, he's practically a man" schtick. So she left me alone every weekend. Me and my friends cleaned out the liquor cabinet, had lots of sex and those who smoked weed, did so. Outside of course. Irresponsible? Perhaps. But nothing was damaged, the house didn't burn down and no one got injured or dead. At a minimum, that's what you should expect from teenagers. Hell, maybe that's even the max you should expect out of them. Good kids or not, teenagers are probably going to do some stupid shit when mom and dad aren't looking. T

Our 17 year old has spent just about every weekend alone since February while we have traveled to watch our eldest play college baseball. Of course, you have to know your child well (and have good neighbors that can keep an eye out.) Of course, each situation is different. Our son doesn't drink, date, or use drugs. He's a bit aspies, so he has a limited number of friends and really dislikes novelty, which makes it difficult for him to travel with us. Those bright boys, when raised properly tend to make well-reasoned decisions. Mine haven't let me down yet.
