User Details are only visible to members.	My Mother would have slapped the shit out of me, had I been sassy to her. Zero tolerance from her and no excuses. I spent quite a bit of time in my room with door shut & headphones on to keep my mouth shut and ass intact when I was a teenager. I attributed alot of my daughter's sassiness to the fact that we divorced when she was a pre-teen. Her attitude and bad moods were almost exclusively reserved for me and usually just at our home. The one time she exclaimed that she'd go live with her "Daddy", I packed her clothes and told him to pick her up after school. She changed her tune after the second night away from cable and computer, but I made her stay the whole week. Overall, I am very lucky that neither kid really got into trouble, they were both honor roll students and became responsible adults -- now they get to experience the highs and lows of the rewarding job of parenting andI get to experience the best job ever....grandparenting:) Shelly

User Details are only visible to members.	from the time my 2 boys turned 13 it was like they became possessed. i wanted to send them off to boarding school lol, but they finally got better by their late teens. i wanted a girl but am so happy i didnt have one now since there is so much more to deal with with girls. i do have a granddaughter now, so i can do all the things i wanted to with a girl, and then send her home for her parents to deal with lol.

Thank goodness my relationship with them is Nothing like the relationship I had with my mother. For the first time ever we visited without extreme tension - and to think, it only took 50 years. She wanted what was best for me, but was really controlling. For instance when I weighed 110 l s. she yelled and me and asked me to take my food back because I took too many grapes. I was only allowed 6 for lunch. I turned extremely rebellious and stopped trying to please her. To her, I was a bitch on wheels. And horrible in Every way. I feared that the pattern would repeat, but it does not. Not if you do things differently.

I would never have spoken to my mother the way my daughter did to me, my mom would smack me upside the head if she didn't like what she thought I was thinking lol. Mr Sav was the same way, very respectful . His mother swears he never gave her a moments problems outside of unscrewing all the screws in the house and taking things apart to see how they worked lol. Neither us were ever in trouble or skipped school. My daughter got excellent grades, never skipped school , no drugs or alcohol but the sarcastic mouth on that child oh my goodness.She was a complete and total spoiled brat. As the baby with 3 older brothers I guess that isn't a surprise. Not that she really said much a few words and THAT LOOK was enough....absolutely no idea where she came by that :) Ya just never know Mrs Sav

They would have an attitude every once in a while and didn't want to talk to hubby or me and if they did, we would have rather they didn't. We are very lucky that our boys just had 'slight' attitude issues and nothing more severe. We know we are lucky. We have had a number of friends that did everything the experts say to do and suffered with some abusive behavior from their child. IT IS NOT ALWAYS A REFLECTION OF THE PARENTING SKILLS. Sometimes, when a parent does everything right and raises one or more child without these issues, they still think they had done something wrong to cause this to happen. The boys were harder on their father than they were to me. It has a lot to do with struggling with the identity issues between their father and them, or in the case of mothers and daughters. The child is asking, do I want to be like my same sex parent? Can I be different from them and still be loved by them? Of course they don't just ask themselves that question and move through it easily. They have to struggle with it and the more the parent tries to 'fix' it the more they rebel as it is a sign of parents controlling them. However, the parent who doesn't try to fix the issues receives high criticism from everyone even the child rebelling from their parents help. It feels like a no win situation. When the opposite sex parent gets along 'better' with child than the same sex parent, it can add to the stress and frustration of the situation. It is the story of the prodigal son or daughter. The little one you loved and loved you leaves but is still physically there. Most of the time it lasts a short time and then they 'return' to be the child you still remember. Most of the time, the child returns to be a better child because they learned valuable lessons, mostly mom and dad love them no matter what they do but will not allow them to do it to them without some (natural) consequences. Sometimes, children do not get over the issues that caused the riff in the family. There are a number of social, cognitive, emotional, physical, and neurological issues that can occur in the child that go unnoticed but keeps the child from going through all the developmental stages completely and smoothly. There are times when something that happened at a very early age, something trivial to most but was huge to the child can keep them from 'getting over it'. An actual case had a young girl becoming violent to family, friends, and strangers for years all because when she was about 5 years old, she wanted a pink sundress and her mother purchased her a purple one. She couldn't let it go and let it fester. There were other mental health issues that developed that made this issue more than it normally would have been. But that is the thing, there is more going on than just parenting skills with the child. This is an incredibly difficult subject for many to discuss, understand, deal with because so much is placed on the parents shoulders to raise the perfect child but there is so much that can happen that no one is aware of inside the child. Often the child does not realize what it is that is the problem and certainly cannot deal with something they can't explain. The stories shared here of the parents who had struggles and found successful relationships later are a great encouragement. To know others struggled with the same issues and found the strength to carry on and lived through it bring great advice and more importantly support. However, if your story hasn't turned out so good with your parents or with your children, it does not indicate failure. It may mean that the real issue is still unknown and as a parent it may not be a reflection of your parenting. Sophia

I have one of each, son and daughter, close together in age--- worlds apart in temperment and personality. My son and I have had a loving & peaceful relationship since his birth. My daughter was equally loved, but life was not so peaceful. She inherited some of both of her parent's more undesireable traits, stubborness, quick temper and a very long memory just to name 3. She was the sweetest little girl until we swore aliens kidnapped the angel at about age 13 and left me a brat. To give her credit, she always got over her temper tantrums quickly--but hurtful words said in moments of anger still cause pain, and are hard to forget and to forgive....but as a parent you have to rationalize that those are words coming from an angry child and try not to internalize those feelings. Those daughters will mature...eventually. For about 3 years--- home really wasn't always peaceful, my daughter thought she was a better judge of her friends character than me. One night I showed up at a place she was not supposed to be at and took her home immediately. She had made an unwise choice in friends and I had forbidden her to be in that boy's company away from school. That boy was older than her, charmingly sleazy and something about him just made me bristle. A neighbor had reported to me seeing her not only in the company of the boy, but he was driving her car, and another VERY BIG rule broken. Since I believe in punishment fitting the offense, the car was parked indefinitely for her to look at every day, she was grounded and I took her to and from school and to her part-time job. She was indignant and I was a witch was the complaint for weeks. I never told her who "snitched one her" either. The attitude change came about a few weeks later as we watched on the local news one night during our dinner as another teenage girl (they were using her car) was arrested along with that boy and 2 others for petty offenses that landed them in jail-- and my daughter realized that she could have very well been that girl on TV in handcuffs. That was an eyeopener for her and the turning point in our relationship. I never cried during the tantrums, door slamming, yelling or name calling that she did periodocally for about 3 years at home. I did cry when she wrote letter apologizing to me for her behavior when she was about to graduate from high school. Today we are close, she is married with her own kids.....one of them a daughter. I am hoping that I set a good example for her to follow when she has to deal with a teenager herself. Shelly
