"Scandle ... aren't most of them "pay on call" these days ?"

I don't know about most of them, but the small communities I'm thinking of are truly run by volunteers who are not reimbursed for their time responding to emergencies. It's possible their employers continue to pay them for the time away if the call comes in during work hours, but I do not have that data.

Hamsin is a sandstorm when it's muggy, windy and about 42C!

I can imagine. A ham sammich would be most uncouth for kosher/halal people....

That's the advantage of living on multiple continents. Let me say this though. Nothing is worse than a 'hamsin'

So as of this morning, the death toll stands at 24. I've never been happier to have been completely wrong in a prediction.

I am stunned that it is not far higher given that entire neighborhoods were wiped out and schools blown over. Perhaps people there are better prepared for them than I imagine.

I suppose it's like how family in Canada see pictures of hurricanes here and don't understand how we're not terrified to live in the Southeast. Or how people in Florida see pictures of blizzards and don't understand how they're not terrified to live in the Northeast. Unfamiliar hazards are far more terrifying than familiar ones.

Growing up in a small Wisconsin town, we had our emergency siren. But the good ole' folks up yonder called it the noon whistle. It was nicer than thinking it was the run to cover or die siren.

Kinda miss the good old days.

Scandle ... aren't most of them "pay on call" these days ? I know that's the case in rural Illinois, I thought it was in Wisconsin as well
