being fairly new to riding motorcycles (rode in the fields when i was a kid) i just got my license and was out today taking a ride to relax and enjoy the day but one thing had me a little concerned while riding. i was on an open country road with a good cross wind which at times felt like the bike was going to blow right out from under me. is this normal ? never seen or heard of a bike being blown out from under someone by the wind but the feeling made me a little nervous with oncoming traffic. maybe i just need more ride time to get comfortable with different road conditions. BTW i have rode with others who are licensed and they all say i handle the bike great but that strong crosswind has me thinking.

User Details are only visible to members.	Take the rider safety course and try not to ride in conditions you are not comfortable with. In time you will get used to it.

User Details are only visible to members.	Take a motor ride safety course ASAP. You should be informed about many riding and safety tips. I have ridden in cross winds that I would guess gusted to 40 mph or more. First you must be in shape. It is real work holding the bike on the road. Going down I-25 I saw SUVs’ blown off of the road and the highway patrol had pulled off all high profile traffic. If the cross wind is from your right, ride in the right tire track. That way if you get hit by a gust you should be able to react and correct by the time you’re in the left tire track. And vice versa if the wind is from the left. Watch and study the side of the road that the direction of wind is coming from. When you come up to a guard rail the rail will block the wind and your bike will stand up. And be ready for when the rail ends. Same for trees or any other structure close to the road. Be really careful when passing trucks. Pass as far as a way from them as you can. For example if the wind is from the right get as far left as you can if you’re passing on the left. Your bike will stand and turn into the truck when the truck starts to block the wind. The closer you are to the truck the worse the change up will be. Then when you reach the front of the truck be ready for the really big wind push coming off of the front of the truck. The closer you are to the truck the bigger the wind push will be and harder it will be to control your motor.

User Details are only visible to members.	I recommend taking a state-approved motorcycle safety course. Emergency-maneuvers are one thing that they teach. I also recommend regularly practising maneuvers. One excercise I often do while riding is to practise evasive maneuvers...I'll tell myself that the next feature of the road-surface my eye picks up will be something to avoid...might be a pathc in the asphalt, a crack, etc...when I see it, the first thing I do is to look at something else. The reason is what is taught in every rider-course, that we go where we look. WAY too many collisions happen because of 'target-fixation,' in which the rider's attention is locked on what they are in danger of running into. Train yourself to look at your escape route and follow it. Now this all sounds great for VISIBLE threats, but what about those nasty crosswinds? All you need is the second part what I just described...when the gust catches you, look where you want to go, and go there. You might need a little body-language on the bike, and you might need a little burst of throttle...whatever you need, make it so. I'll also teach you a trick for steady crosswinds...stick your knee out into the crosswind. In other words, if the wind is blowing from the right, stick your right knee out. How far depends on the wind, and above a certain amount of wind it doesn't work...but often it does. Now you want some REAL cross-wind training, get yourself a nice tall and light dual-sport motorbike and come down here to TexSux. You'll get a workout. I have such a bike and recently rode it from Dallas to norhteastern Wyoming via the panhandle, NM, and Colorado...had lots of fun with crosswinds up on Pike's Peak and Mt. Evans. No problem, just keep yer wits about you, stay loose in the saddle and on loose on the controls, and be one with the bike. Happy riding, and stay safe! :)

Thanks for all the replies. i do ride as safe as can be and did slow down when the winds were hitting me to a speed i felt comfortable with plus i do go at my own pace even though other riders are going faster i just let them go. if they want to fly at excessive speeds thats their choice. almost lost it for the first time when i was turning and came across some gravel. good thing i was paying attention or i could have scratched up the bike and myself. BTW i have a 96 Honda Knight Hawk 750 with just 8,000 miles never been dumped or at least not any signs of ever having been dumped.

User Details are only visible to members.	Best advice anyone can get when riding a motorcycle.. NEVER EVER RIDE FASTER THEN YOUR SKILLS.. always ride at a speed you are comfortable with. even if you are following someone else...and they are going faster then you are comforable with.. slow down.. We ride in a large group.. sometimes 40 or 50 other bikes.. and if we are ahead of a rider that is going slower.. we slow down for them.. and let them keep a comfortable speed. Nothing wrong with going slow.. riding is a enjoyable pastime.. :) but hitting the ditch is not so enjoyable..lol.. so just go at your own pace.. We even put the newer riders out front so they can ride at their own pace.. and we can keep an eye on them. :)
