I used the gel to treat low testosterone for a couple of years with mixed success. It's a very expensive approach and when I changed my insurance I needed to find a less expensive therapy. I switched to shots and almost instantly got far better results at a fraction of the cost.

Additionally, I was recently seeing an internist at the Mayo Clinic and discussed the whole low T treatment process with him. He preferred the shots for many reasons. The topically applied gels we're not as popular there  because of the high susceptibility of exposure to others.

bikernnurse1, welcome to the SLS forums.

I bet that the injections of T also contribute to your fine physique ;)

Glad you found a solution.

Mr. Greeneyes, you do not state whether you have ever tried the gels/creams so we don't know whether you are speaking from personal experience or on the words of others. I am not trying to be argumentative and I am speaking with all due respect but......

The gels/creams are the LEAST invasive hormone replacement therapy. No chance of infection from needles or other instruments that break the skin. While I will agree that it may not be the best approach for everyone, it is certainly a viable option for many, maybe even most. My online research seems to suggest that the gels/creams are the most commonly prescribed treatment. Millions of men and thousands of doctors aren't wrong.

My personal experience. My total testosterone was less than 100!!! With gel/cream therapy, it is approximately 1000 and is STABLE. With the gels, because you get your hormones everyday just like you body used to do it, the levels don't decline near the time for another shot.

So, I think the best advice is for each of us to work with our doctors to determine the appropriate therapy for us as individuals. Discouraging people from exploring the gel/cream therapy is not necessarily doing them a service. Maybe it is the one right for them.

If you are a male getting testosterone replacement therapy GET YOUR PSA tested regularly!!!!! On that, Mr. Greeneyes and I are in total agreement. We also agree that our lives as men are much enhanced by having at a testosterone therapy that works for us. We are leaner, more alert, more ambitious and sexier....pretty nice, HUH!?

Please view the above as a discussion designed to bring clarity, not an argument for the sake of argument. :)

I forgot to add: Guys....PLEASE get your PSA checked 2 times a year if you are using Testosterone replacement therapy. T does NOT cause cancer, but it feeds it and makes it grow faster.

Also, when using T, your testicles stop producing it. Creams and gels are not the best delivery form in that the body doesn't absorp it very well. They do work for some people but not many. They work in the beginning but seem to stop after a while according to the men and women I talk too.

Golden Couple: I've been getting pellets for 9 years. My gynecologist does them. I pay $150 insertion fee and $40 per pellet. I usually get 3-4 pellets so cost is either $310 or $270.

I usually get 50mgs E and 75mgs T about 2-3 times per year. What are you paying and what are your doses?

I was diagnosed with hypo androidism (low testosterone) about 10 years ago. I have only used the lotion/gel topical treatment. It has worked fine. The only problem is that the insurance company would not pay for enough of the medication to properly treat my condition.

I am now getting a lotion from a local compounding pharmacy. I apply it every morning to my chest and shoulders. They compound the medication to specifications that are specific to my blood tests. Works great!

I suspect that many who have not found the gels/lotion to work do not have a prescription for enough of the medication.

I considered the implants. The insurance company will not cover them at all and they are very expensive. I considered the injections, inexpensive but leaves low testosterone symptoms just before a new injection. You also have to have an injection!!!!!

The rub on gel/lotion works for me.

I am not surprised that the snake oil did not work for you.

The symptoms that caused me to seek help were no or very short lived erections. Viagra, Cialis, Levitra etc. did not help.

We play with other couples as a 4some from time to time. Most often, my little guy is the last man standing!!!! :) I would say it works. I love better living through chemistry!

GET YOUR PSA TESTED REGULARLY!!!!!

My hubby was diagnosed with low T and his doctor prescribed the creams and after three months his T was still low so he then asked us if we objected to the injectable and since I am a retired nurse the answer was of course not. The results after just forty-five days have been amazing (he is now as amorous as he was when we first met and I LOVE it). The secret to the injections is to BE REGULAR with them. I keep our calendar marked and we are always on time with them.

Creams and gels do not work near as we'll as injections and pellets. First of all, a man'ts testicles will quit producing Testosterone on their own when using T therapy. The creams/gels are not well absorbed in the skin for most men to see any benefit. So it's a double hit there. The injections work but there is a roller coaster effect in the T rises after the injection, then falls till you need the another. Pellets deliver the most consistant dose all the time.

Please, please make sure you get your PSA checked 2x per year and the DRE once per year. Testosterone does NOT cause cancer, but it does make it grow faster. If your PSA goes up over 1 unit, that is cause to get things out.

PLEASE GET YOUR PSA CHECKED. Thanks!

Well I consulted with my Dr. yesterday and my Testosterone level was still low ! So I am going to say Ageless male did little to nothing to increase testosterone ! I have a script for testosterone now . I went to the drug store to fill it and it is very expensive , about 400dollars / month . Them I went to a local "compounding pharmacy " and they can give me the equivalent for about 55 dollars / month . Kevin

That's one of those jokes that's so obvious now, I'm embarrassed for having not thought of it myself.
