Original Starting post for this thread:
This is a little bit late, but Coach Coryell died on July 1.

If you like football, especially offensive football, you owe it to Coach.

The West Coast offense started with him. The Greatest Show on Turf. Checking down receivers. Receivers reacting to defenses.

John Madden and Joe Gibbs learned under him.

What we all watch today, we Chargers fans got to watch in the 70's.

For his influence on the game, he should be in the hall of fame...

Peace

As with most of this stuff, the origins are murky.

Wiki West Coast Offense.

The best I can say is that Sid Gillman/Don Coryell were doing their version of the WCO in the early '60's with the Chargers, Cardinals, and SD State.

Walsh was developing his system in the late '60's early '70's with the Bengals.

How much each "borrowed" from the other is unknown, but Gillman/Coryell predate Walsh by at least half a decade.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it...;-)

"The West Coast offense started with him."

Was Bill Walsh a disciple of Coryell? I attribute along with everyone else that Walsh gave birth to "The West Coast Offense" back in the late 70's-early 80's? I am not an aficionado of football lore, but simply a near lifelong 49'er fan asking a question.
