Original Starting post for this thread:
After several mails and extended chat we have been invited to meet another couple at their home, not a party, but just us and them. I feel the need to bring something to show our gratitude. Neither couple are heavy into drinking. What, besides alchol, would be appropriate to bring?

I usually bring along a nice bottle of red wine or chilled California sparkling wine (champagne), but if they do not drink, maybe a little round of Brie soft cheese and some Table Water Crackers would be nice.

Something else that I've brought (since I live in California) that got a warm thank you is a small, elegantly packaged, 8 ounce box of Sees' Candy. Get the special ones; the truffles or the pastel bon bons, but be careful to not get the ones with nuts, because you never know if your host or hostess might be allergic. A bigger box of candy is just too much.

Etiquette? While our approach is chips and dip if you showed up on our doorstep with Malibu and condoms I don't think we'd complain at all.

We invited a single male over and he brought wine and a small unpretentious but beautiful bouquet of flowers for me.

People have brought all sorts of things, from chocolate covered strawberries to candles. An edible gift is nice, as long as it is light.

Have a good time, and relax.

I'd suggest you bring your sense of humor, an open mind and zero expectations. The boy scout in me says to also bring condoms and something comfy to throw on just in case but leave that in the car until you're sure how the night might progress. (smirk)
In this type of situation I don't believe a hostess gift is necessary when you're meeting at their place ; if it were a house party that's a different story. If you really don't want to go empty handed I too would just bring along a nice snack to share.

How about a little snack. Our opinion is anything non-sexual, you don't want to be to presumptive.

You all know where you would like the evening to go, so perhaps a nice bottle of fragrant masage oil would be nice. Something they could enjoy after you are long gone.
