'It sounds like it's synonymous with "redneck" '

They are complete derivatives that have evolved into terms unbecoming by sheer ignorance.

It sounds like it's synonymous with "redneck", which while usually considered derogatory is sometimes a badge worn with pride.

Scandle - I find the term low class. I have also noticed that those that call themselves "coonasses" also tend to be rather low class in mannerisms, and dress and often seem to be under-educated (or act under-educated).

I can see how many Cajuns would find the term derogatory considering the overall quality of those that wear it as a badge of honor.

I'm guessing this is like the terms "Yankee" and "Canuck". It can be derogatory but it entirely on how it's delivered.

Thanks, rabbit. How do you feel about the term?

Here in Wisconsin we proudly call ourselves "cheeseheads" and use "flat-landers" to describe those from Illinois. Depending on the conversation, both of those terms can be pretty offensive - or not. ;-)

From Wikipedia (excerpt)

Coonass is used in reference to a person of Cajun ethnicity. Many consider the term an insult, but others consider it a compliment or badge of honor. Although many Cajuns use the word in regard to themselves, other Cajuns view the term as an ethnic slur against the Cajun people, especially when used by non-Cajuns.
