I had problems with shin spints too last summer. After doing some research online I found some exercises to do. It took almost a month of walking 5 times a week for the pain to stop. I've now lost 65 lbs and can walk/jog 10k distance.

Yup, hubby is a runner for many years, he's aware of the so called 'barefoot' trend. He tried it for 3 months, developed a slew of problems, went back to properly fitted running shoes. The problems that he had went away.

There's always vibrams or other 'toe shoes' - like barefoot without cutting up your feet if you are outside on the street. mr svc loves walking around in his. I did some crossfit workouts in mine for about a month but in the long run I decided I didn't like 'em for long running. Went back to my Nikes for jogging and have Rebok Nano's for crossfit now.

*A good one will tell you it improves posture, corrects imbalances, increases core strength, decreases joint pain and improves general mobility. *

Paranoid or not, I would highly recommend that you think long and hard before you begin running barefoot. I practically live my life barefoot, but I wouldn't dream of running barefoot (unless on the beach).

A sports specialist (MD), I'm certain would be more than happy to explain to you what happens to your body when you do :).

Well yes, but that's when we didn't have broken glass, and sharp metal scrap everywhere and we were built just a tad differently :). But more power to you :)

Barefoot is a growing trend these days. Either really barefoot (saw a gal doing that at the Las Vegas Ragnar - crazy). Or using toe shoes/Vibrams/etc. Theory - humans evolved walking/running barefoot. African distance runners didn't start out with running shoes (neither did South American natives who run all the time in the Andes mountains). Landing on the ball of the foot and rolling the heel down, using hamstrings to propel forward, not quads. Worked on my pose running yesterday. Started with jumping rope and bouncing landing on the ball down to heel, then jump "running in place" then drop rope and move forward trying to keep the same footwork. Takes practice to break bad habits.
