Well, this seems to be in the news lately (you might have heard a little something about it....lol). By the way, this is a long post.... I thought, since this forum seems to have a lot of experts that check in now and then....I'd get a general take on it from you frequent posters. Perhaps I can get some advice from someone who knows - I'd like to start out by saying that I am very anti-steroid - - I think trying to "bulk up" with that kind of artificial boost is a real mistake and seems logical to be life-shortening. I've been on a slow and steady workout and modified eating lifestyle (notice I did not use the word "diet") since about November 15th of last year. In that time, I have managed to lose appx 25 lbs. Basically, this has been accomplished by eating natually occuring/less processed pieces of meat (ie. chicken, fish, shellfish, steak), lots and lots of veggies and greens, and little else. More generous eating before 2pm, more restrictive after that. Alchohol consumption to a minimum - a lite beer when pressed in a social engagement, but ususally none. Lots of water, diet coke when I can't stand it any more. Mild excercise in the form of rotating: walking, treadmill, stationary bike 2-3 times a week, and a routine of 20 gym machines 2-3 times a week, 3 sets of 15. If I can finish the 3rd set without quitting early two sessions in a row, the weight goes up to the next thingy. They've been inching up....but I'm not one of those "grunters" at the gym by any means.. :) This is pretty good progress.....I've been trying to visualize feeling more energetic and positive, and not necessarily obsessing over couting the pounds all the time. Anyhow - all this seems fine, but I have to say its hard not to wonder if there's anything that could give me a lift and get this going a bit faster. To wit, read this quote from Sly Stallone: ---------------------------------------------- "HGH (human growth hormone) is nothing," the 61-year-old actor tells Time magazine in its February 4 issue. "Anyone who calls it a steroid is grossly misinformed.......Testosterone, to me, is so important for a sense of well-being when you get older," he says. "Everyone over 40 years old would be wise to investigate it because it increases the quality of your life. Mark my words. In 10 years it will be over-the-counter." ------------------------------------------------------------ So, when I hear a guy like that, who's 60 for god's sake and looks pretty good in these movies lately say that....I wonder to myself if I should not be thinking along those lines. Not to try to "roid up" and get all muscle bound, but jeez, any help at all......I mean, I'm nearly 35 and the last time I got serious about this I was 25....and let me tell you, if I had been as disiplined then as I have been the last 3 months, I would be 100% back in shape already. So - I wonder, can we have a real discussion of this without me getting totally flamed out?? Can any of you trainers or doctors let me know if this is even worth looking at? I've done some reading on this, but it seems its so hard to get to the real truth about a topic like this once it gets all crazy in the Media Crisis Mode. I look forward to reading what you might have to say. I welcome private emails on the topic if anyone would prefer that.

So, when I hear a guy like that, who's 60 for god's sake and looks pretty good in these movies lately say that....I wonder to myself if I should not be thinking along those lines. Re: L-Dopa Although this drug (normally used to treat Parkinson's disease) is effective as a provocative test for hGH release, sustained use does not appear to materially alter lean body mass/fat relationships. The thousands of people who take the drug regularly for Parkinson's disease are not notably lean. Moreover, the drug's effects are somewhat indiscriminate in that a number of other hormones are released on provocative exposure. There continues to be a search for an orally active ghrellin-like compound by pharmaceutical companies world-wide. The market for such a growth hormone releasing compound will be large indeed.

" Um, go back and read my post about L-dopa. Do a google or Pubmed search. Thing is, you do not see "instant" results, which is what everyone wants. Instead supplementation needs to be an ongoing thing with subtle changes over time. The substance has been founf and it has been studied. It is just cheap and there is no way for big pharma to make billions off of it.

User Details are only visible to members.	hGH ingested directly will simply be degraded in the stomach and upper intestine. Whether orally active hGH releasers exist, no one really knows. However, we're pretty sure no one has found them yet.

User Details are only visible to members.	I use to give myself shots of HGH 4 years ago (recommended by my trainer). I was on it about 6 months and didn't notice any difference. So, I stopped using it. One draw back.....very expensive stuff.

Destin: The research I have done so far indicates that any of the pills or powders or substances that are supposed to stimulate your natural production of HGH are essentially snake oil. What I am considering is: 1. My original idea to go to a doctor specializing in anti-aging, who will do a series of tests and then may recommend medically supervised daily injections of HGH - in a balanced dose to produce some anti-aging effects (reduced body fat, increased lean muscle, improvement in skin, hair, metabolic rate, etc). This would be balanced, apparantly, to minimize any adverse effects, ie, a destruction of your natural secretions of HGH over the long term, strange phsyical effects, etc. The whole idea is not to become a body builder, but to give a boost to my 3.5 month 30lb weight loss (slow and steady - see orig post). 2. Option 2, based on recommendations here, is to visit an endocrine specialist with an eye toward measuring testosterone levels, etc and possibly bringing that into medical monitoring/adjustment to compensate. (have an analysis done). Again, the whole point of my post was to solicit any information anyone had here on receiving medically supervised HGH treatments for this reason....I have gotten some nice feedback, but still would love more going forward if any one has any real experience or 'close to first hand' knowledge. I plan to set two initial consultations for the next few weeks along each path and listen to what the doctors have to say, and what their tests reveal - before making any decisions on how to proceed. There is no rush...I simply am exploring if there is any therapy available that can speed my progress along this path...its all about living a better life if I can. That's been my focus from day 1 starting this change in me last November...focus on feeling better and doing positive stuff, not obsessing over starvation and weight loss (or crazy insane body-building or steroids). I love these forums and how you all share so much info with me, publicly and privately. Thanks again to all that continue to respond.

User Details are only visible to members.	As usual, there were great and thoughful comments all around, and I appreciate the input. I'm still unsure...but I am thinking of setting up the intial appointment with the "anti-aging" folks, and then an appointment also with the endocronologist, and compare advice and try to turn my BS detector on maximum sensitivity. It'll be interesting, I think, to see if the anti-aging clinic tries to go for the "hard sell" - that'll make me more sure that they are selling snake oil... Thanks again...
