With all the talk of growth industries in the future with Solar and Wind Energy. How many of us are in the Solar or Wind Energy business. PA has several Wind Farms across the state, most built by Florida Power and Light (FPL). New Jersey will be installing what will be called a Solar Farm on 12 acrea of a farmers land in S. Jersey. How many of SLS'rs are active in the Solar and Wind business or supporting businesses.

User Details are only visible to members.	Thanks, Ring! We had not explored the option of a bale house and stumbled onto it by accident. Now that I have researched bale homes further, we are really excited about living there. The other neat side point is in a really bad quake (which we don't have up there) its good to know that the last houses standing will be bale homes. The county we are in has the highest number of registered bale homes in the nation. There is something like over 300 of them in the county. The other important factor is they are the most highly resistant structures to forest fires. They are so tightly packed that the testing done on them reports there isn't enough oxygen in the walls to allow a fire to get started. Very dense. The most important element in a bale home is to protest the wall from weather (even though covered by stucco). We have a 360 degree 12' deep porch all they way around the house, which makes for nice outdoor living space.

User Details are only visible to members.	Simbaxx You live in my dream house! Only thing better for me would be a home built into the side of a mountain. I have been drawing plans for this house since I was 14 but it would be so expensive to build that my research led me to bale houses. It is so easy to build green that I can tell you as a builder that eventually it will be the only way to build. I've already done most of it myself and continue to use it wherever I can. All the best in your new home

User Details are only visible to members.	We've now taken "Green" to a whole new level. We halted our construction plans when we found a 6 year old Santa Fe adobe style home near us on 53 acres that is a straw bale house and larger than what we were going to build. All the walls are 24" thick with adobe/stucco on the outside and all plaster on the inside with radiant heat flooring. All the doors and windows are the high efficient Anderson 400s with no need for air-conditioning with 24" walls. Even over 100 degrees outside it stays cool inside. Escrow closes early August and the only thing left to do is install the solar panels, which PG&E will pay us back. We will be totally self-sufficient on our new property. Can't wait!

Meant to say: It's the trillions of dollars in tax breaks that corps get-and DON'T 'trickle down' (what a load of shite THAT is!) that is killing this country. They get massive breaks and then turn around and remove all manufacturing and anything else they can from these shores...and then KEEP the profits offshore!!! We are certainly a bunch of exceedingly DUMB and gullible people........

Jinx, So, the Govmt can give YOU $19k to build a distributed, terrorist PROOF electrical supply for your home....OR they can give billions to power companies to build ugly, dangerous and vulnerable power lines out of the desert to connect to the REST of the stupidly designed 100 year old system....? Take the money and scream it from the rooftops...the ONLY reason we don't have MORE of this is because the power companies want you beholden to them, regardless of the failure of their business plan and the danger it puts this country in. Massively distributed power networks (rooftop solar, residential wind, micro-hydro) are the ONLY long term solution to this country's (or this world's) energy problems. It's already happening in Europe and Australia. Wake up folks and stop buying into the BS spewed by the corporations! Use your EYES and EARS to actually LEARN about something instead of just swallowing the corporate packaging and talking points. The less power they have the more we have...and POWER is a critical place to apply this lesson. Do you realize that with proper shielding (not hard to do) a decent solar system can withstand an EMP? That's nuclear war folks. Fire, storms, social unrest? Child's play.... Get your system jinx....use the Govmt. $$....and understand that this is not what is killing this country. It's the trillions the corps in this country that are killing us. Squeezing us for every single penny without regard for citizen of country. If we don't wake up we deserve what we get.....
